SAP Supports FIRST LEGO League in Al Khobar City to Encourage Innovation Among Saudi Youth
Al Khobar City, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia — Several young Saudi nationals in Al Khobar City recently took part in FIRST LEGO League (FLL), an interactive robotics program aimed at fostering education, technology and innovation among children.
The 2009 challenge for teams across the world was ‘Climate Connections’. Over the course of many months, the teams met to strategize, design, build, program, test and refine a fully autonomous robot capable of completing various missions.
Two teams of children, aged between nine and 14, were mentored by SAP and participated in the finals: SAP ABTAL coached by Ali Shehri, and SAP Loadstar coached by Asad Wosaibi. The two teams performed well, with their robots completing many of the missions set. As a result of hard work and creativity, the SAP Loadstar team won the Best Participating Team Award.
“We are extremely proud of the dedication and creativity shown by the children who took part in the FLL in Saudi Arabia. For our Saudi-based SAP staff it was a great opportunity to mentor a team of future strategists and develop their interest in software and technology,” said SAP Loadstar mentor Asad Wosaibi, Customer Engagement Manager, SAP Middle East & North Africa.
The FLL educational program helps the region’s children recognize and develop their skills and interest in software and technology. Through the initiative SAP employees have the opportunity to engage with local communities as team leaders and mentors of FLL projects.
“Delivering innovative solutions is one of SAP’s core values. We want to cultivate this culture in communities across the world through education initiatives such as FLL,” said Sergio Maccotta, Managing Director, SAP Middle East and North Africa.
The FLL initiative emphasizes SAP’s continuous commitment to education and science, especially in regard to information technology. The program offers SAP employees the opportunity to volunteer to support the future generation by using their specialized skills and knowledge.
