With the business apps, augmented reality tools, and other mobile software now available in the world of SAP – not to mention the numerous articles right here on SAP.info – the topic of mobility looks likely to remain on the tip of everyone’s tongue. As if these examples weren’t enough, SAP took this year’s CeBIT convention as an opportunity to announce its own app store for SAP Business ByDesign; for more, check out “Preview: SAP Sales OnDemand” and “Take a Look Around SAP STORE.”

Meanwhile, SAP’s information portals are following suit: SAP Community Network (SCN) now offers access to versions of its blogs that are tailored to smartphone screens. This represents the first step in optimizing SCN and its numerous areas for mobile use while maintaining the network’s unique style. Further details on SCN’s areas and content are available in the article “Information Junkies Read On.”

Here, we’ll introduce you to the mobile version of the SCN blogosphere and also show you how SAP.info looks on smartphones and tablet PCs.

Blogs in over 100 categories, organized by date, topic, and author; and the 25 most popular posts from the previous month – all this is on offer in the blog section of SCN. SAP’s mobile software and ABAP Dynpro are two of the site’s trending topics at the moment.

The top priority, when designing content for screens smaller than those of conventional desktop PCs, is to control the flood of information.  A legible layout directly benefits readers.

This was the impetus behind a mobile interface developed with the help of the iphone-universal framework. The interface’s special cascading style sheet (CSS) lends an app-like feel to blogs and menu navigation while adjusting the interface to the size of the user’s screen.

The mobile version of SCN gives readers three categories of blogs: the 50 latest posts, the 25 most-read posts from the previous month, and all posts sorted by topic.

Individual menu items can be accessed through large on-screen buttons, which makes browsing through the site easier. Since the framework can’t display large images or extensive lists of code, it provides links through which users can view content in the conventional SCN layout while maintaining the site’s mobile navigation.

This initial step toward an optimized, universally accessible SAP Community Network shows where things might be headed. As a platform for interaction, collaboration, and information, SCN seems predestined for mobile use.

SAP.info mobile

SAP.info has already been available in a format that automatically adjusts to the screen size and resolution of virtually any Internet-ready smartphone since Q1 2010. Just like on our “traditional” site, the articles appear in chronological order, with the latest at the top.

Our mobile site is also organized in categories and offers top-10 lists and a search function to make navigation easier. The interface supports touchscreens and trackballs (BlackBerry) and naturally comes in a version optimized for iPad, as well.

More information is available in the article “SAP.info for iPhones and BlackBerrys” – or better yet, simply direct your smartphone’s browser to www.sap.info.
