SAP, NYP and SCS to train over 1,000 students to expand talent pool and develop innovative enterprise solutions for organisations

SingaporeSAP Asia (SAP), Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) and Singapore Computer Systems Limited (SCS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding today to launch the Enterprise Technology Innovation Centre in NYP. The collaboration is supported by the Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA) and Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA).

Through this collaboration, NYP will train more than 1,000 students over the next three years by integrating SAP technology into the curriculum, with emphasis on SAP NetWeaver, the technical foundation for enterprise service-oriented architecture (enterprise SOA). SAP, NYP and SCS will develop innovative enterprise solutions for SAP customers from various industries, thus involving students in real-life projects and equipping them with the necessary skills to meet the expected increase in demand for SAP professionals specialising in enterprise SOA.

The centre aims to take the concept of enterprise SOA to the next level by transforming web services into enterprise-level services that can innovate business processes. SAP will provide the latest software and training to build up expertise in SAP technology. The centre will be equipped with the latest SAP solutions including the SAP Netweaver® platform and mySAP ERP 2005, the world’s leading service-enabled business application.

Chief Executive of DSTA, Mr Richard Lim said, “In our experience in supporting MINDEF SAP-related projects, we saw the need to increase the pool of SAP expertise in the IT industry for MINDEF, as well as to meet the broader national level agenda. By driving this initiative, DSTA together with NYP, SAP, SCS and IDA can enlarge this pool of IT professionals.”

SCS, Singapore’s leading IT service provider, agrees that there is a shortage of SAP expertise. “There is still an acute shortage of Singaporean resources to implement national interest projects. It is of paramount importance that local institutions build up SAP resources to meet this demand from strategic industries, such as defence and homeland security, which has to be fulfilled with local resources. SCS currently has over 250 SAP professionals, but with the increasing demand for SAP-driven applications, we are very keen to join hands with SAP and NYP to develop more SAP professionals to meet market demands,” said SCS’ President and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Tan Tong Hai.

Enterprise SOA is SAP’s blueprint for an adaptable, flexible, and open IT architecture for developing Web services-based, enterprise-scale business solutions that provide companies with the flexibility to leverage their existing IT investments to respond quickly and cost-efficiently to business changes. Businesses can save costs and gain the competitive edge by innovating enterprise-scale business processes through enterprise SOA.

Organisations wishing to embark on projects based on enterprise SOA can leverage the centre’s infrastructure and expertise. These organisations can then start to adopt enterprise SOA in small pilot projects through co-innovation with the centre, without incurring high infrastructure or training costs. Such projects in the past include a Singapore-specific Employee Self Service application, an operating theatre and medical staff resource optimisation system for the healthcare industry, and a pricing management solution.

“Enterprise SOA is key to business success as it promises to deliver unprecedented flexibility to customers, improves the reuse of software components and therefore reduces development time and integration cost. Once again, Singapore sets the pace for IT adoption in the region as this Centre is SAP’s first for enterprise SOA in Asia,” said Mr Hans-Peter Klaey, President & CEO, SAP Asia Pacific. “Together with our partners such as SCS and NYP, SAP aims to fuel co-innovation with our fast-growing ecosystem of customers and partners to deliver innovative and high-impact solutions.“

“NYP is pleased to work with SAP and SCS in setting up the Enterprise Technology Innovation Centre to build new capabilities and talents based on SAP enterprise technology through industry project collaborations. We are committed to developing new and innovative applications for companies, and believe our capabilities in SOA, Web services, enterprise grid and mobile technology will be beneficial to our partners. This collaboration will also add value to our students, by providing them knowledge and experience composing business processes leveraging SAP NetWeaver,” said Mr Edward Ho, Deputy Principal/Technology, Nanyang Polytechnic.

With this centre, students will have opportunities for industrial attachments. DSTA and SCS will offer internships to NYP students. They will be involved in the technical challenges and integration required to implement enterprise SOA in a hybrid of SAP and non-SAP based environment.

The centre’s goals of facilitating innovation and expanding the talent of professionals specialising in enterprise SOA are in line with IDA’s recently announced iN2015 master plan, where technology capability development and manpower development are key focus areas in enabling a globally competitive infocomm industry.

“As Singapore looks forward to 2015, it is critical for our local infocomm companies to remain innovative and stay ahead of the competition. This Enterprise Technology Innovation Centre at NYP will help our local companies develop new infocomm capabilities that will enable them to stay relevant and move up the IP value creation chain. And by equipping students with training and opportunities to work on industry projects, the centre will enable them to acquire higher value-added expertise to be our next generation of techno-strategists” said Mr Chan Yeng Kit, CEO, IDA.
