Serosep Cuts Reporting Times with SAP Business One

November 27, 2014 by Iain Bate 3

Serosep is a leading manufacturer and distributor of laboratory diagnostic instruments and consumables supplying hospitals and laboratories across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

In March 2010, the Limerick, Ireland-based company deployed SAP Business One with support from SAP partner IIS and has enjoyed various benefits since. Emma Morgan, financial controller, explains.

What systems did you have in place prior to the implementation of SAP Business One?

We had [a common software package] which was used to manage our accounts. We had also built a bespoke software application to manage our stock.  We didn’t have anything to manage CRM and we had very poor visibility over what was going on. We were never really happy with our former software but I suppose a fear of the unknown stopped us from switching solutions before we did. It was a big leap of faith, but we’ve never looked back since.

What were the issues you faced as a business before implementation?

The majority of the issues we had were around stock management and our inventory levels. There was also an awful lot of work on stock management as we couldn’t rely on the accuracy of our reports, so that meant we were forced into frequent stock counts. Another major problem was currency conversion. We were unable to revalue stock – as most of it is bought in sterling then converted into Euros. This resulted in a huge manual process every month to get a correct valuation on our stock levels.

How has the company benefited from deploying SAP Business One?

Stock management has improved because it’s more accurate now in SAP Business One. From an efficiency point of view we are now able to focus our attention on other areas of the business rather than trying to get the day-to-day information right. Now we have more time to do analysis and more detailed reviews of accounts, for instance. There’s always room for improvement, but we’ve certainly come a long way from where we were with SAP Business One. From a personal point of view, I’ve been able to save about three to four days per month since we started using SAP Business One because the reports are accurate and we can rely on them.

Has SAP Business One helped you comply with industry and regulatory standards?

The system has because we sell into the healthcare sector – so we have to have batch control and such procedures. The system is very good from that perspective. We had to select a system that works in line with the procedures that we have to have in place.
