Having already introduced you to Google’s mobile operating system, Android, it’s now time to get to the apps. Android Market is the place where users can purchase and download these mini-programs for their Android-based devices; it is comparable to Apple’s App Store. The platform has been making some serious headway: Some 218,000 apps are now available. While this figure is not far behind App Store’s 350,000 mobile applications, Apple still offers a greater variety and selection because many software developers are focusing on iPhone, iPad, or BlackBerry devices.
Nevertheless, Android Market does house a number of apps suitable for use in business. Finding them can be a chore – many SAP apps are found in the category “Books & Reference,” for example – so we’ve compiled a list of the best Android apps in the following areas:
- Word processing
- Business travel
- SAP apps

Fritz!App Fon: Good news for anyone with a Fritz!Box 7170, 7390, 7320, 7270, or 7240 at home – this free app lets you make VoIP calls through your router, saving you the usual cellular fees.
gReader: This app collects all of your RSS feeds and compiles them in a single overview. Unlike with the iPad apps Reeder and Read It Later, however, the content is not available offline.
Bluetooth File Transfer: True to its name, this app enables you to send files and contacts to any Bluetooth device.
TeamViewer Beta: Already known to many as PC software, TeamViewer is now also available for Android smartphones. With this tool, multiple users can access a common desktop PC interface at the same time and control it while on the go. Using this beta version on Android devices does, however, require version 6 to be installed on the target PC.

OfficeSuite Pro: Thanks to OfficeSuite Pro, you can work with Microsoft Word and Excel files on your Android device. While the app is free, it does require you to have a full version of Microsoft Office installed at the office or at home. OfficeSuite Pro makes it possible to open and modify DOC, DOCX, XLS, and XLSX files and save them in TXT or CSV format. In addition, you can view PowerPoint presentations and PDFs and even open ZIP files.
Documents To Go: Unlike OfficeSuite Pro, the free version of this app – also available for iPhone and iPad – only allows you to view documents. However, it is excellent for making presentations to customers. The full version can also modify documents and view PDFs at high resolutions.
Adobe Reader: With Adobe Reader, Android users can open PDF documents on their mobile devices. As an added advantage, the app also works in offline mode whenever wireless Internet or cellular data access is unavailable.

Theft Aware 2.0 Trial: Now there’s no need to panic if your phone is lost or stolen. With Thief Aware 2.0 Trial, you can locate and lock your device by sending it an SMS. Thieves can’t deactivate the app, either – it hides behind another app’s icon. Meanwhile, you can remotely instruct your device to delete all of its contacts or send them to a specific phone number.
Leo: This popular online dictionary of six languages now has its own free Android app. Leo is only available online, however, meaning that significant data-roaming charges may be involved if you use the app while abroad.
Google Maps Navigation: This free app is a boon on any business trip. With its speech input function, it can recognize the addresses you want to search for and display the corresponding satellite images.
Cab4me: No chance of a taxi passing by? Cab4me’s street maps can guide you to the nearest taxi stand.
WiFi Manager: This app makes it easier to find available wireless access ports.

SAP Support Note Viewer: Developed by the SAP Community Network, this app enables SAP S-users to view and share SAP support notes, as well as save them to an SD card or download them in PDF format.
SAP Note Browser: Unlike the app above, SAP Note Browser does not require an SAP user account to browse through SAP Support Portal.
SAP Guest Logon: This app enables visitors to log into the guest network at any SAP office location. Leaving the network and logging back in a short time later won’t require you to re-enter your password.
SCN Forums: SCN Forums compiles all of the RSS entries from the SAP Community Network Forums.
