SAP HANA Integration for SMEs

Feature Article | February 8, 2012 by Heather McIlvaine

Last year, SAP revealed plans to integrate SAP HANA into SAP Business One, its solution for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). It was to be the first SAP solution to run completely on the SAP HANA platform. SAP announced yesterday that the promised integration has arrived. Analytics powered by SAP HANA for SAP Business One is entering ramp-up at the end of February, and general availability is planned for the end of 2012.

At the same time, SAP is extending SAP HANA to the midmarket, the group of slightly larger SME customers that typically run SAP Business All-in-One. For these customers, SAP HANA, Edge edition, delivers real-time analytics on big data. This offering is currently available.

SAP HANA for SAP Business One

Thanks to the new integration with SAP HANA, SAP Business One now includes predefined reports that allow users to conduct data-intensive analyses, such as inventory analysis, as well as predefined dashboards to display business insights. These dashboards were previously included with SAP Crystal Reports software, but on SAP HANA they can now be delivered up to 25 times faster.

Furthermore, analytics powered by SAP HANA for SAP Business One provides customers with three new dashboards for sales opportunity, stock analysis, and CEO key performance indicators.

One of the most exciting new features that SAP HANA enables is the ability to search for information across the entire SAP Business One application. Users don’t need to know where the data is stored; they can simply enter a search term and get results in seconds, Google-style.

SAP HANA for SAP Business One will be available to both new and existing SAP Business One customers exclusively from certified SAP channel partners worldwide. Subsidiaries of large enterprises that are running SAP Business One, however, need not apply. SAP HANA integration is limited to stand-alone SAP Business One customers. These companies must be running the latest release of SAP Business One (version 8.82) to take advantage of the integrated analytics powered by SAP HANA. If customers are running an older version, they’ll have to license the 8.82 version separately.

Companies interested in purchasing SAP HANA for SAP Business One should note that they must license the same number of users for the analytics function as they have for SAP Business One. Licensing for the SAP HANA engine is separate.

SAP is also bringing SAP HANA analytics to its customers in the midmarket; these are companies that typically run SAP Business-All-in-One. The new offering – called SAP HANA, Edge edition – brings all the benefits of SAP HANA to this group of slightly larger SMEs. It is a full use license that includes rights for data modeling, data loading, and data access for reporting. The offering includes SAP Landscape Transformation software, Data integrator, SAP HANA Studio, and SAP HANA Engine.

Real-time applications powered by SAP HANA, such as SAP ERP rapid-deployment solution for operational reporting with SAP HANA, can run on top of SAP HANA, Edge edition. In addition, customers are able to bundle it with SAP BusinessObjects Edge Business Intelligence software to take full advantage of real-time business insights. SAP HANA, Edge edition is currently available from enabled and authorized partners around the world.

In-memory computing does require specific hardware. Intel, IBM, HP, Dell, Fujitsu, Cisco, Lenovo, and Hitachi all provide the type of servers that can run SAP HANA. Since the offerings mentioned above (SAP HANA for SAP Business One and SAP HANA, Edge edition) are only available through SAP partners, you’ll have to ask the partners about their particular policy on hardware.
