“Basically, we now have four interdependent business segments with varying IT requirements, namely manufacturing, marketing, distribution and international operations”, says Peter du Plooy, Engen’s CIO. “This means that our IT department has to provide differentiated products and services, depending on the current market situation. In some cases, demand can be high in one area and slow in another.” What’s more, he adds, Engen is looking to expand its Sub-Saharan African business – and IT is an integral part of the success of the acquisitions and operations.

In the past, IT made promises that it simply couldn’t fulfill. Now, thanks to the technically feasible in-memory design, “real time” is closer to a reality. It is developments like this that make the world of information technology so unique for du Plooy. He loves the fact that IT never stands still.
