On September 21, 2013, Munich’s mayor Christan Ude will officially open the 180th Oktoberfest in the Schottenhamel beer tent with the traditional tapping of the beer barrel – all to the traditional tune of “Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit.”  The 16-day festival, boasting 613 carnival rides and attractions spread across the 35.5 hectare Theresienwiese fairgrounds, will once again delight visitors with food, drink, and fun in 14 large festival tents. Last year, more than six million attended the “Wiesn”, as locals like to call it.

To help you get the most out of your Oktoberfest visit, we’ve put together five useful apps that will make it that much easier for you to find a particular carnival ride or that special beer tent you want to party in.

Oktoberfest Munich 2013 – Everything at a glance

This free iOS app provides the user with a practical all-round overview of the 2013 Oktoberfest. Divided into the categories “Info” and “Service,” it lists things like beer prices, the different brass bands and their venues, and a short description of what makes each beer tent unique. It also displays program info featuring the integrated geo-location of various events, as well as a live Web cam for checking out the weather or finding a place to camp.

The Oktoberfest Munich 2013 app is available in the Apple App Store.

My Wiesn 2013 – Social media

Find people, network in chats, or check how crowded the tents are – this free app is a Wiesn community packed with lots of useful features. Users can sign in with their Facebook account, configure their profile, and add functions like the personal beer counter and the visitor counter to record their own Oktoberfest statistics.
Facebook friends can stay up-to-date with each other’s current whereabouts using the GPS-based “tent check-in” function, as well as write directly on their Facebook wall.

MyWiesn 2013 is available in the Apple App Store and in the Android Market.

“How Wiesn are you?” In this Web app, the user answers eight funny and at times sarcastic questions to find out whether they are a “real” Bavarian or, perhaps, not so familiar with Bavarian culture and traditions after all. Optimized for smartphone, tablet, and PC, the quiz displays the results as a picture, which the user can configure at will before sharing on Facebook or sending as an e-mail greeting using the photo upload function. The Bavarian “tone” of this app, as well as the chance to win prizes, mean that users will enjoy taking the quiz again and again.

Sing Wiesn Hits – Song texts

Sing along to Wiesn hits like a real Bavarian: For just €1.79, you get all the lyrics of the best Oktoberfest songs. Sorted alphabetically, you can find the hit you need in just two clicks and quickly join the locals in singing everything from “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Hey Baby” to classics like “Griechischer Wein.” Unfortunately, the iOS app does not come with the music to the lyrics, which would definitely be a big help for first-time Wiesn visitors.

Sing Wiesn Hits is available in the Apple App Store.

iPlattl – Bavarian folk dancing

If you need more than just singing and swaying to stay in the Oktoberfest mood, open up the iPlattl app and learn how to dance the traditional “Schuhplattler” Bavarian folk dance. The app includes videos of the six different “Schuhplattler”, which range from easy to difficult, and a step-by-step tutorial for the easiest level, called “Hausei”. The “Schuhplattler” dancer performs on an Alpine meadow wearing traditional costume and accompanied by an accordion, giving this app real Bavarian flair. The app is designed for iOS devices.

iPlattl is available in the Apple App Store.
