The announcement was made at the site’s official ribbon-cutting ceremony, led by Executive Director of InvestBulgaria Agency Mr. Pavel Ezekiev and SAP Executive Board Member Claus Heinrich. “In 2004 Bulgaria attracted over $2.5 billion of foreign direct investment, 20 percent of which in high tech, and this performance is continuing into 2005,” said Pavel Ezekiev. “Bulgaria is proud of its talented and skilled people, who are contributing to the development of technologies widely deployed worldwide. It is my pleasure to congratulate SAP, one of the largest technology companies investing in Bulgaria, on its new office building.”
“Research and development are key to SAP’s organic growth strategy,” said Claus Heinrich. “SAP Labs Bulgaria is a strong contributor to SAP’s success and with its highly qualified and motivated workforce, Bulgaria is increasingly fortifying its innovation standing in Eastern Europe.” SAP’s initial research site in Sofia was established in May 2000, when a team of 60 software developers working locally on a Java Enterprise Server project was incorporated into SAP AG. The organization then joined the SAP Labs network in 2002. Bulgaria was chosen as an SAP Labs location because of cultural compatibility and the availability of a skilled and flexible workforce.
