It’s in Our DNA: Industry-Specific Business Analytics

Companies have been trying to get a grasp on the data they have in house and beyond—to make use of this asset—for years, but how can they do so when their corporate data is doubling every 18 months?

We first responded to this problem with new tools that companies have standardized on to create reports and dashboards. Our customers said the tools are elegant and highly useful, but that they want more—particularly help with specific industry questions that they are trying to answer on a daily basis with true insight and foresight.

We think you’re going to love what we came up with. For over 35 years, SAP has been doing deep work in over twenty-five industries, and during that time we have accumulated industry best practices and incorporated them into our software. Today, we’re announcing business analytics applications that will do the same—take innovative new software and marry it with our DNA in industry and line-of-business knowledge. We’ve taken intelligence and turned it into an application that’s designed to give customers fast deployments and deliver value equally fast. And better than a homegrown application or a one-time services engagement, this is a product that will be supported and enhanced.

Unlike other companies, we’re not just obsessing over tools. We have excellent tools in our toolbox, but are equally focused on working hand-in-hand with customers to solve business problems that are impacting their industries today. For example, if a consumer goods company wants to evaluate the true effectiveness of trade promotion spend, they can now do that.

And we have more in store. Our vision for the future of business analytics is one in which people can get real real-time information delivered to them on mobile devices so they can respond instantly, on the job. We are also working toward a future in which companies across an industry can perform analytics in the cloud, allowing for cloud-based data to be aggregated, de-personalized and used to create benchmarks for the entire industry by vertical or region. Imagine, for example, a hospital administrator getting critical information pushed to them that tracks how well their hospital performs compared to other hospitals in North America. If their hospital is behind, they can gather best practices from the industry to see how they can improve their standing.

If you look at the history of SAP, we started out by automating basic business transactions so they could be recorded in real time. Then SAP led the next big trend in enterprise software, re-engineering business processes—moving beyond automation and actually re-thinking how people could conduct business so they are even more efficient, and building software accordingly. Now we’re leading the next challenge for businesses: how to maximize the value from the proliferation of data both inside and outside of the organization.
