The heat shimmers on the highway on this hot afternoon in southern Florida. On each side of the road, sugarcane fields stretch away as far as the eye can see. Off on the horizon, I can make out a few industrial plants. “That’s our sugar refinery in Okeelanta,” says Luis Paulete, director of IT at Florida Crystals Corporation.
Florida Crystals’ agriculture encompasses 187,000 acres in South Florida. Each year, nearly 5,500 employees at its subsidiaries and affiliates can produce more than seven million tons of sugar worldwide. At its two sugar mills and its refinery, Florida Crystals turns sugarcane into a huge variety of sugar products. The company produces sugars, such as natural cane and demerara sugar, and is the only U.S. grower and producer of organic sugar.
The complex sugar production process would be nearly impossible to manage without a modern IT structure, so the company’s managers decided to implement SAP software early on. Florida Crystals’ agricultural businesses use SAP ERP, SAP CRM, SAP NetWeaver Portal, SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse, and SAP Solution Manager.
