Has Google Maps made that age-old conflict – Let’s just stop and ask for directions – obsolete? I wouldn’t hold my breath. Likely, the conversation simply has changed to sound more like this: Let’s just check Google Maps to make sure we’re on the right track.
Since the mapping tool first appeared in 2005, it has made everything from finding that new restaurant to planning a road trip extremely convenient. The tool becomes not only handy but also quite powerful when you combine all that geographic information with a smartphone. Now, SAP is bringing that power to businesses.
Speaking of Google, keep an eye out for SAP.info’s upcoming profile of Google +, the newest social media channel. For now, though, let’s get back to Maps.
On Wednesday, July 27, SAP and Google announced the latest product of their collaboration. The idea is to combine the interactive map and satellite functions of Google Maps and Google Earth with enterprise applications. More specifically, to bring Google Maps API Premier, the business version of Google maps, to SAP BusinessObjects solutions, SAP StreamWork, and mobile apps.
What concrete benefits will this bring to businesses – other than being able to find the nearest take-out restaurant? Here a few examples: A telecom operator could use Google Earth and SAP BusinessObjects Explorer to perform dropped-call analysis to pinpoint the geo-coordinates of faulty towers. And a team of customer support representatives could use SAP StreamWork and Google Maps to determine the location of consumer complaints within specific geographies and make decisions to prioritize resolution.
The new offerings from this collaboration are already available in SAP StreamWork. Further availability is planned for the upcoming 4.1 releases of SAP BusinessObjects BI solutions and SAP BusinessObjects EIM solutions.
As SAP BusinessObjects 4.0 was just released in May of this year, there will likely be a bit of a wait before you see the 4.1 version. In the meantime, take a look at these screenshots to get an idea of how Google Maps will brings business data to life. And you can read up on the latest SAP BusinessObjects functionality in our article, “BI Suite: BusinessObjects 4.0.”
