SAP has just released SAP BusinessObjects Mobile 5.0, an update of its popular SAP BusinessObjects Mobile app. SAP product manager Srikanth Rao presented the newest features and enhancements in a recent Webinar for the Americas SAP Users’ Group (ASUG).

Two apps unite

SAP BusinessObjects Mobile 5.0 combines the best of two apps: SAP Business Objects Mobile and SAP BusinessObjects Explorer. In addition to SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence dashboards and other content that was previously accessible via SAP BusinessObjects Mobile, users now also have access to SAP BusinessObjects Explorer’s information spaces and exploration views, which are ways of displaying data records that allow the user to analyze information with filters and search functions. To be able to use the new integrated app, a company must be using version 4.1 of the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence platform. And to access SAP BusinessObjects Explorer content, all connections to SAP BusinessObjects Explorer have to be via the mobile server. According to Srikanth Rao, one of the great features of the new app is its ability to collaborate with SAP Jam and SAP StreamWork.

Access to self-service BI

The new app also supports access to content in SAP Lumira Cloud, the cloud-based self-service BI solution. Users can share documents with colleagues as well as access and visualize data records directly on their iPad via the Web browser.

Two platforms for collaboration

The new app supports both SAP Jam and SAP StreamWork as possible collaboration platforms. SAP Jam is the default, primary platform, but the system administrator decides which platform is to be used. The platforms cannot be used in parallel. A further enhancement is the BI Inbox support function. Users can now access the documents in their BI Inbox on a mobile device and customize the app to enable automatic downloading of new documents. To use this function, you must be using SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence version 4.1 SP01, 4.0 SP06, or 4.0 SP07.

Standardized design means better usability

According to Rao, SAP has also improved the user experience for first-time users. The tool bar that appears when you start the app has been simplified. In addition, there is now only one startup screen, the two startup screens of the previous version of the app – the home and server screen – having been merged into one. Users navigate through the app using a control panel on the left side. There is now also a secondary tool bar for common features. When you open a BI report, command buttons appear in the upper tool bar for frequently-used actions, such as for sending e-mails or for collaboration functions – SAP has harmonized the report tool bar across all views in the app.

Sharing voice comments with SAP Jam

SAP’s new BI app also supports collaboration via voice recording. Users can record voice comments with a microphone, attach those comments to a document, and share that document with colleagues by e-mail, SAP StreamWork, or SAP Jam.

SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence: New display options

Waterfall, bubble, or bar charts: The new app lets you link all kinds of elements in SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence reports. What’s more, clicking a graph will display its details. For SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence documents, you can also adjust the x- and y-axes of graphs to ensure maximum exploitation of your mobile device’s display area. Rao reveals that the new BI app features enhanced customizing options for document color design, too.

Geo analysis on iPhone and iPad

Previously only possible on the iPad, geo analysis is now supported on your iPhone as well. Rao explains that users can now also localize regions for data analysis. In other words, there is no standardized view of the world map – instead, users can slide specific regions or points of interest to the map’s center, such as the Asia-Pacific region or Eastern Europe, for geo analysis.

PDFs from SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence

SAP BusinessObjects Web Intelligence reports are now available as PDFs, says Rao. Users leaf through the pages by swiping the screen, and documents can be viewed offline. To use this function, companies must be using SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence version 4.1 SP01, 4.0 SP06, or 4.0 SP07.

Development environment also available for iPhone

According to Rao, the new app comes with a Software Development Kit (SDK) for mobile add-ons. Partners can use the JavaScript SDK, for example, to develop add-ons for both Flash and HTML5 dashboards. The SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio development environment is now available for the iPhone as well.
