Encouraging everyone to “create, play, and care,” KEEN’s mission is to create innovative, sustainable products that inspire everyone to have fun and play outdoors, while being equally passionate about making a difference in the world. Keeping up with its aspirations for progress and philanthropy during tremendous growth meant it needed help to grow-up as a company.
KEEN’s philosophy is reflected in over 300 styles of footwear and accessories, from bags made out of recycled rice paper and airbags, to seamless left and right socks that feel custom fitted. KEEN products are currently sold in more than 5,000 stores in over 60 countries. KEEN began by asking a simple design question: Can a sandal protect the toes? The answer was yes: the Newport – the first hybrid sandal.
KEEN HybridCare helps tsunami and hurricane victims
One year after KEEN’s founding in 2003, the CEOs Martin Keen and Rory Fuerst made a huge decision. In 2004, KEEN donated its entire annual advertising budget (about US$1 million) to the relief efforts following the tsunami that struck Southeast Asia, starting what became the HybridCare program. Eight years later in 2012, KEEN HybridCare organized relief efforts after Hurricane Sandy in New York, coordinating 2,300 volunteers and donating 7,500 pairs of shoes, 2,500 pairs of socks, and US$15,000 to the American Red Cross.

As a small company that was growing tremendously, KEEN needed a solution that would help it meet increasing demands. KEEN’s legacy enterprise software could not keep up, especially given KEEN’s desire to seamlessly collaborate with its supply and retail partners to ensure that products were reaching its many fans around the world. When Keen decided it needed a new ERP system, it looked to the major name-brand companies in the footwear industry, and wanted to implement the same type of solution and benefit from their established best practices. SAP offered the perfect solution.
Following respected competitors
KEEN worked with its implementation partner, Gravity Pro Consulting, to figure out what steps needed to be taken and how to best prepare for this new experience. KEEN’s thorough training of business users was a critical factor for a successful implementation. Gravity Pro provided technical and business process expertise to KEEN and both companies worked in partnership to ensure that the right resources, schedules, and decisions were in place.
SAP Business All-in-One solutions have given KEEN visibility across the organization and encourages collaboration at all levels of their global operations. KEEN is also able to streamline operations with their business partners.

For the first time, KEEN can directly ship its products from its production facilities to retailers around the world. KEEN also relies on the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence suite to provide teams across the company with comprehensive analysis and reporting; reports can now be run in minutes, not hours, and the information is always current and reliable. KEEN is using the data from the SAP solutions to better predict demand and ensure the right products are in the right place at the right time; this lowers costs and increases customer satisfaction. KEEN can now plan production requirements with greater precision and with more lead time for product runs.
Improving company-wide performance and decision making
KEEN plans to start using the SAP Advanced Planning & Optimization component to further improve demand planning and execution. The company also wants to use the SAP Business Planning and Consolidation application to enhance company-wide performance and decision making. The scalability of SAP Business All-in-One will make it simple to integrate these new solutions and it will continue to grow with the company.
