Nestle and Freescale transform the user experience for employees using SAP software that’s designed for the way people work.

As the world’s largest food company with more than 300,000 employees in about 150 countries, Nestle has good reason to want to simplify its business processes. The same goes for Freescale Semiconductors, a company that provides sensors, chips, and other advanced technologies to a wide range of sectors from automotive and industrial to consumer markets. Both companies have turned to SAP Fiori UX and SAP Screen Personas to transform the employee’s user experience.

Nestle Makes System Access Easy and Fun for Road Warriors

Driven by an increasingly mobile workforce along with company-wide modernization efforts, Nestle is a prime example of how organizations are changing the user experience around enterprise applications. The company’s goal is to securely share system access with a range of mobile employees. These include people in sales who rarely work in an office, workers in large production and warehouse facilities that are going increasingly paperless and mobile, and traveling employees who use shared service centers.

Speaking at SAPPHIRE NOW, Daphne van den Brule, Product Owner for SAP Fiori and SAP Screen Personas at Nestle, described how the company put six applications on SAP Fiori UX for employees across the company’s supply chain and human resources teams. Essentially a reimagined user experience for customers, SAP Fiori UX is the company’s new user interface available in the cloud, on premise, or as a hybrid deployment. Using SAP Screen Personas, Nestle configured user screens for faster navigation to information that each worker requires.

“Our users now have a consistent screen experience in terms of look and feel across all devices, whether computer, table, or smartphone. We were also able to remove the clutter on each screen. In just two clicks, the app shows only the information most relevant for each employee to get the job done,” said Brule.

According to Adi Kavaler, Global VP, UX Product Management at SAP, the solution is deliberately designed for easy adaptability to the business demands of individual users and the unique role they have within an organization. “We made SAP Fiori UX role-based and task specific. Our software has always been role-based, but now our customers can quickly, easily, and in a personalized way, access apps for the highest productivity,” he says.

Freescale Semiconductor Dramatically Boosts Productivity

Cheryl Sutton, an ERP Systems Analysts at Freescale Semiconductor, has been leading her company’s SAP Screen Personas team as part of an overall transformational initiative.  The company is modernizing user systems for its 17,000 employees located in over 20 countries. Sutton has been pleasantly surprised at how SAP Screen Personas helped Freescale simplify HR processes.

“SAP is notorious for not having such a great user experience because the software is so complex. But SAP Screen Personas really allows us to take those SAP GUI transactions and tailor them to meet our specific, individual worker needs. It’s also delivered entirely through a web browser so it’s really convenient for our users,” said Sutton.

In a demonstration at SAPPHIRE NOW, Sutton explained how Freescale developers used SAP Screen Personas to consolidate data from 19 screens into one location, reducing search time for employee information from over a minute to five seconds. “HR needed a more simplified way for employees to look up information that’s scattered across systems. So we created one centralized location as a user launchpad. It’s clean and bright, reflecting Freescale branding with a simple user interface and company colors. With one click, queries search and find information, bringing it right back to the user in seconds. It’s easy to use, which has decreased training time immensely,” she said.

Pragmatism Rules at SAP

Sam Yen, Chief Design Officer at SAP, is well-aware that this isn’t the first time that SAP has tackled its user experience. He’s equally up front about why the company’s improvement efforts are paying off now.

“Our user experience strategy—new, renew, and enable— is based on direct conversations with hundreds of customers to prioritize and deliver. They advised us to be very pragmatic, starting with the things that made the most difference to their business, and allowing them to implement at their own pace. We’ve also aligned our services and solutions to our strategy. SAP Fiori UX is an excellent example when we talk about the renewal efforts of the strategy. SAP Screen Personas reflects the enablement aspects of the UX tools.”

While consumer technologies have long focused on the user experience, enterprise vendors like SAP have realized that people are an equally important factor in design. Now more employees are getting what they want namely, the same level of simplicity from applications in the office as those that they use at home.
