SAP Welcomes Equestrian Champion Ingrid Klimke as Advisor for Equestrian Sports Solutions

WALLDORF — SAP SE and German equestrian champion Ingrid Klimke will work together on innovative technology solutions for equestrian sports. Drawing from her 21 years of experience, Klimke will be involved in the innovation process, advising SAP on how to best use technology to simplify and enrich the fan experience at equestrian events. Her input is also intended to help SAP develop analytics software with the aim to enhance riders’ performance.

“Ingrid Klimke is the ideal advisor for our ambitious goals to further develop our technology offerings for equestrian sports,” said Stefan Lacher, head of Sponsorship Technology, SAP. “Her experience, professionalism and passion will add great value to our team and will help bring the fans closer to the sport.”

The prototype of SAP Equestrian Analytics software will be showcased at CHIO Aachen, a popular international equestrian festival held each summer in AachenGermany. The technology provided by SAP will enable fans and riders to visualize the action on the cross-country course of the eventing discipline. With a 2-D viewer for easy-to-grasp data visualization, a leader board and an interactive competitor chart, both fans and athletes can get insights into individual routes, speed data, time gaps and heart rates of competitors. Riders can also use this data to optimize their training and improve their performance. Additionally, Klimke and SAP have successfully tested an intuitive new interface merging videos from the rider’s helmet camera with the digital data provided by SAP Equestrian Analytics, which allows the spectators to experience the course and the action from the rider’s perspective in a lively, visually compelling way.

Drawing from her rich experience, Klimke will give further insights into how fans can be engaged even more closely.

“I could ride a horse before I could walk. I want to share this passion with my fans,” said Klimke. “This is why with SAP as a partner, I look forward to being able to actively contribute to the development of solutions that enhance the fan experience. I am excited to use this innovative technology to present and explain specific new aspects of my rides to my fans. For the first time, I will be able to give them a better understanding of the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of the action on the course.”

Having competed in four Olympics, Klimke has also claimed a host of domestic and international titles across the three disciplines of dressage, show jumping and eventing. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Klimke won a gold medal as part of the German three-day eventing team. She and her horse FRH Butts Abraxxas went on to win gold again four years later in London. As a result of her successful track record both as an athlete and as a trainer, in January 2012 Klimke was the second woman ever to be appointed “Riding Master,” a special, honorary title of the German Equestrian Federation.  Since 2013, Klimke has also been Solidarity Ambassador for the Fédération Equestre Internationale, an international equestrian federation that aims to develop equestrian sports globally.
