The true value of a technology is realized when customers envision its possibilities to re-imagine work and everyday life. We created the SAP HANA Innovation Award to recognize how customers are innovating with SAP HANA.

The 2015 awards have built on the success of last year and have been expanded to include:

  • More countries eligible to participate – 31 countries compared to 15 in 2014
  • Introduced a Business Application Stream to highlight the use of SAP HANA as a platform for building custom applications to address the unique challenges and opportunities that customers are facing today
  • The stream for how customers are deploying SAP HANA to drive businessvalue was named Business Scenario
  • Aligned the categories to use cases focused on real-time analytics, process simplification, and technology innovations harnessing Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data
  • Encouraged partners to submit on behalf of customers
  • Increased the amount of charitable donations directed by the winners to $60,000

The results have been amazing. Nearly 50 qualified entries were received. The 19 finalists were selected from over 18,000 votes. An expert judging panel comprising of SAP executives, SAP user group experts, other SAP HANA leaders and industry analysts judged the finalists and selected the winners.

All 19 finalists attended the special event where more than 500 attendees celebrated the success.

All of our entries showcased amazing innovation leveraging the SAP HANA platform. The solutions createdfrom each entry ranged from optimizing and simplifying core SAP business processes, enabling true self-service analytics on big data, to creating new innovative business models driven by Internet of Things scenarios – all realized by the capabilities of the SAP HANA platform.

I was honored to be one of the judges that selected the winners: As follows are examples of the value derived by some of the organizations who entered the contest:

Dell Inc. is one of the largest technology companies in the world with more than 100,000 employees Its sales organization uses businesses intelligence tools to identify new opportunities, optimize sales forecasts and drive strong customer relationships.. Sales reps spent nearly 80 percent of their time accessing and manipulating data from multiple source systems. Dell has now rolled out the new BMS system powered by SAP HANA platform to 14,000 employees. Sales people now can drill down into the system, better predict when sales will close or organize their sales territories more efficiently in order to ensure better customer coverage. They can run self-service analytics in a matter of minutes rather than weeks and get analytics reports 60 percent faster than before.

AmerisourceBergen Company is one of the largest global pharmaceutical sourcing and distribution services companies. It serves over 30,000 customers—that order 1.7 million line items daily the majority of which must be delivered the next day. By deploying the SAP CO-PA Accelerator and
BW on SAP HANA, staff now have real-time time access to information. Additionally customers can now access all information related to the products that they have or will order from the company from a single portal, saving time and ensuring that pharmaceutical and healthcare items are available for consumers, hospitals and doctors.

South African Breweries

South African Breweries (SAB) operates seven breweries and 40 depots in South Africa with an annual brewing capacity of 3.1 billion litres. The company wanted more insight into its order to cash processes, specifically when it came to the supply chain. Its existing systems only provided retroactive reporting. With SAP HANA, SAB now get a timely view of stock movement from the point of order origin through to dispatch from the distribution center. They can monitor order progress to ensure that the company doesn’t reach a saturation point where it is unable to secure its planned trading volume. The system also helps the company to actively maintain its 90%+ delivery on time commitments, especially with larger retailers. Distribution management can view how many vehicles are available to deliver stock, how many are still out, how many are due to come back, and how many orders are outstanding.

ConAgra Foods, Inc., is one of North America’s largest packaged food companies. They needed more accurate forecast of product demand in order to better understand future costs to maximize profit. Businesses need to understand the input costs, when the product needs to be made, and costs to move the product throughout the supply chain to its end destination. ConAgra partnered with SAP to co-innovate on a Total Margin Management (TMM) solution that provides costs at the lowest level of granularity, and the forecasting capabilities to model scenarios to better predict the future. Now users can quickly perform iterative scenarios and “what if” forecasting which increases the reliability of the margin forecast and produces a single forecast leveraged across all segments, while simultaneously creating a forecast that is risk adjusted and applicable to multiple business areas.

Bristow Group is a leading provider of helicopter services from facilities across the globe and transports people and materials offshore safely and efficiently every day. Historically, Bristow was comprised of a series of companies around the world that operated more independently. Bristow selected SAP Business Suite on HANA and went live with the first release of SAP Business Suite on HANA that supported global operations for finance and supply chain. Finance department now have more traceability and improved analysis and auditability and the significantly improved global accounts payable system processes enables Bristow to run financial reports across all company codes from a single integrated system with much faster report output and data analysis.

Combining transactions and analytics into one system has allowed business users to run advanced reporting directly against the transaction system leading to considerable improvements in the speed of key reports such as MRP, purchasing reports, and delivery due list reports. We see pioneering times ahead for SAP customers, as showcased by the winners of the SAP HANA Innovation Award this year.

A blog is too short to tell all the amazing stories from this year’s contest, so be sure to view all the entries on the SAP HANA Innovation Awards 2015 website. I look forward to next year’s SAP HANA Innovation Award competition; and I encourage those of you doing great things with the SAP HANA platform to submit your entry next year.
