Duke University Creates Winning Combination With New Player Statistics Site Powered by SAP HANA

WALLDORF SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) today announced that Duke Athletics has taken fan engagement to a whole new level by choosing SAP technology and LSI Consulting to revamp its statistics site with a complete archive of Duke men’s basketball statistics since 1906.

The new site includes individual game box scores, lead information, player stats, season stats, year-by-year breakdowns, rankings, team records and a host of other features, all powered by SAP HANA — right in time to watch the Blue Devils go dancing at March Madness this year.

“We all know heart and soul is the key to a game, yet the ability to analyze large data volumes can translate into definitive advantages for organizations,” said Steve Roach, CEO of LSI Consulting. “By leveraging advanced sports analytics as part of its business intelligence framework, the Duke Blue Devils Athletics organization is able to increase fan engagement through data transparency, which strengthens its brand recognition as both an academic and athletic powerhouse.”

Every fan knows that few things match the excitement and thrill of a championship season, the ultimate key performance indicator in sports. While 351 teams compete in NCAA Division 1 Men’s basketball, 350 go home empty-handed at the end of the season, yet fans continue to return. The reason: the fan experience is all about 24×7 engagement before, during and after the season. Fans are no longer passive observers — they participate, analyze, critique, fantasize and socialize with and about their favorite players and teams in real time. In fact, graduate students from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business were part of the core project team behind the solution, built by Duke, for Duke and putting fans in the driver’s seat.

Duke’s rich collection of critical basketball statistics was seamlessly integrated using LSI’s hosted SAP HANA platform and UI5 repeatable solution, providing fans with the industry’s premier data analytics capabilities. Like any fan base, Duke fans follow their team on the go, and the new site is engineered to offer a user-friendly experience that works just as well on a mobile device as it does on a laptop. In addition, SAP and LSI Consulting have added multiplatform social media integration, shot charts and printer-friendly box scores — a perfect tool for Duke alumni to dominate barstool trivia battles or for the Cameron Crazies to study a little Blue Devils history.

“Duke men’s basketball has a rich history that predates the internet age,” said Frank Wheeler, region VP and general manager, SAP Sports and Entertainment North America. “For years, historical player data was laboriously hand-collected off of microfiche. Now, by harnessing the power of the SAP HANA platform, Duke fans are able to collect the fruit of that labor and view vast amounts of data in one easy-to-use tool.”
