WALLDORF — SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) today announced it was named the world’s most sustainable software company in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) for the 11th consecutive year.
DJSI is a leading benchmark for investors who integrate sustainability aspects into their portfolios. SAP has been listed ever since the indices started in 1999. The DJSI is managed cooperatively by S&P Dow Jones Indices and RobecoSAM AG.
SAP reached a total score of 77 percent, achieving the best scores in the software sector in all three sustainability dimensions:
- Economic: SAP, 71 percent; industry average, 39 percent
- Environmental: SAP, 87 percent; industry average, 29 percent
- Social: SAP, 80 percent; industry average, 29 percent
In nine of the 21 key ranking dimensions, SAP reached industry-leading scores. Dimensions where SAP reached scores close to 100 percent include climate strategy (95 percent), corporate citizenship and philanthropy (97 percent) and environmental reporting and social reporting (96 percent each).
The score of 95 percent for climate strategy recognizes SAP’s ambitious target to become carbon neutral by 2025. The company’s programs to execute on this target have already helped cut emissions to 3.6 tons per employee at midyear 2017 compared to 5.0 tons at midyear 2016. The score also reflects the company’s new environmental policy, which specifies focus areas for environmental action. The policy supports SAP’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 13, Climate Action, and Goal 7, Affordable and Clean Energy.
SAP earned 97 percent in corporate citizenship and philanthropy (industry average, 28 percent) for touching more than 3.24 million lives and yielding almost 339,000 volunteer hours within SAP’s corporate social responsibility programs in 2016.
In labor practices, SAP received the maximum score of 100 percent (industry average, 46 percent). The score reflects primarily transparency and the efforts SAP made in gender diversity. SAP was also awarded the Economic Dividends for Gender Equality (EDGE) certification in 2016. In 2017, SAP reached its goal of having 25 percent of management positions held by women.
SAP scored 96 percent in both environmental reporting and social reporting, compared to industry averages of 23 percent and 25 percent respectively. In this area, SAP stands out with its annual integrated report and quarterly updates, both published externally, and its internal sustainability dashboard, which breaks down social and environmental data to team levels.
Further, independent sustainability rating agency oekom research AG again ranked SAP as the leader in the software and IT services sector in its 2017 Corporate Rating Report. SAP again received oekom prime rating. Since 2009, oekom research has reported annually on global corporate responsibility, documenting trends in the integration of sustainability criteria into corporate governance.
