SAP Adds Edge Services for Connected Assets and Smart KPIs for Application Enablement

SANTA CLARA, Calif. SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) has introduced Internet of Things (IoT) and analytics capabilities to enable connected, intelligent business operations.

Customers can now use SAP Edge Services with SAP Asset Intelligent Network to overcome workflow disruptions due to intermittent or slow connectivity. In addition, new capabilities for building dashboards help customers track performance and gain new insights. The announcements were made at Internet of Things World, being held May 14-17 in Santa Clara, California.

SAP Asset Intelligence Network brings operators, dealers, engineering service providers and manufacturers together into a collaborative cloud-based network to optimize the performance of operational equipment. SAP is now extending the network with SAP Edge Services so that businesses can run processes uninterrupted in disconnected and high-latency scenarios. Operators can gain faster access to equipment information, operations manuals and other data and documents needed to complete mission-critical tasks.

The new connectivity with SAP Edge Services enables intelligent local decision-making, bringing IT and operational data together to trigger maintenance work orders or network notifications. It also helps reduce cost and computing time for industries in remote or disconnected environments such as offshore oil rigs, mining, aeronautics and defense deployments. With SAP Edge Services, customers can replenish materials and supplies, execute maintenance work, maintain project visibility and perform other functions even when offline, and still be able to synchronize with core systems when connectivity is restored. See the video for more information:

“Businesses cannot afford the round-trip delay and unnecessary costs from edge to core and back to trigger local action,” said Mala Anand, president, SAP Leonardo and Analytics, SAP. “Similarly, our customers can improve the performance of business applications with insight from easy-to-configure dashboards at the user level. We are putting the power of the intelligent enterprise at our customers’ fingertips, at the local level, where and when it is needed most.”

The SAP Smart Business cockpit helps teams visualize and draw insights of key performance indicators (KPIs). It provides analytical drill-down views to complement the SAP IoT Application Enablement toolkit without the need of additional coding. Using application templates, IoT developers can easily configure and embed visualizations into IoT applications by dragging and dropping them on the page. In addition to providing visualized performance insights, SAP Smart Business helps teams to manage by exception, with alerts when KPI thresholds are breached.
