Construction Leader Drives Global Growth, Builds Employee Engagement by 90%

Mota-Engil is a rising star in the European construction industry, owing much of its rapid growth to a cadre of dedicated, agile employees.

As one of the top 30 construction and engineering companies in the region, Mota-Engil shares many of the industry’s challenges, including an aging workforce and increasingly digital world. I talked with Luis Filipe Monteiro, head of Corporate HR and Sustainability at Mota-Engil, during the recent SuccessConnect Berlin event.

Monteiro divided the benefits of its talent management transformation into three major areas: harmonized HR processes, cost-savings from greater HR efficiencies, and a cultural shift toward greater employee collaboration. Using SAP SuccessFactors, Mota-Engil has realized 90 percent time-savings in HR processes.

Social, Mobile Connects Workers

Attracting and retaining people with the right skill sets was fundamental to Mota-Engil’s growth strategy, something the company addressed with SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central, SAP SuccessFactors Performance & Goals, and SAP SuccessFactors Recruiting.

“We needed a solution to help us attract and retain employees with the right skills, especially millennials,” said Monteiro. “Young workers expect the latest digital tools in the workplace. The SAP Jam platform, along with the SAP SuccessFactors apps, are social and mobile, allowing our employees to easily collaborate, access learning programs, manage their performance, and apply for new opportunities.”

Monteiro characterized the entire HR transformation as a wholesale shift toward the digital workplace. Using SAP SuccessFactors, the company has increased employee engagement by 90 percent.

“We are leading a digital revolution in the company, giving employees new ways of working together,” he said. “For example, we have more millennials in Africa and Latin America, and an aging workforce in Europe. With SAP SuccessFactors, we can better manage the challenge of five generations of people in the workforce to develop our future leaders.”
