Duduza embraces a culture of learning – launches Third Siyafunda Centre

JohannesburgThe third Siyafunda Community Technology Centre (CTC) has been launched at the Development Centre in Duduza, Nigel in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

The CTCs have proven to be one of the biggest ICT successes in South Africa with a host of services offerings that provides ICT access to previously disadvantaged individuals. The Centres promote basic and advanced education by providing accredited Isett Seta courses and training. The CTCs also provides access to Internet, Email and Faxing facilities to the communities.

‘The availability of this skill at our doorstep makes things much easier for our people and should serve to encourage most to access these skills and begin to take positive steps towards improving their lives for the better. It is through such projects that we will, through our participations therein, advance our efforts towards creating a better life for all,’ says Councillor Ntombi Mekgwe, Executive Mayor of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

‘It is important for industries to recognise the importance of such programmes, and increase their participation. We at SAP are proud to be part of this initiative, as it assist in ensuring that people have the necessary skills that will buffer them against the current harsh market conditions,’says Maphum Nxumalo, COO at SAP.

‘Access to information is another critical aspect of community development and upskilling, Siyafunda is going to play a critical role in bringing information closer to the people. It will also assist the IT industry in breaking the myth that technology is an industry that can only be accessed by a few,’ says Nxumalo.

The third CTC is launched at the Duduza Development Centre which was established in 2005, and focuses on offering the community the skills that they can use to better their lives. Over and above this, the Centre provides a successful model by assisting the learners in getting employed in their immediate market through its consistent networking with factories and businesses in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

The CTCs are sponsored and supported by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, the Department of Social Development and SAP among others.
