SAP hosts inaugural Shared Services Executive Forum to advance debate, understanding of benefits of shared services model

JohannesburgSAP South Africa is hosting a Shared Services Summit Executive Forum on 25 November 2009, bringing together decision-makers from the ICT industry and private sector to raise awareness and understanding of the benefits of rationalising infrastructure and personnel through a shared services model.

“The summit is positioned as a gathering of thought leaders from South Africa and Europe, who wish to learn and share secrets of achieving business goals through shared services,” explains event organiser, Lynnette Shaw of SAP. “Top speakers and SAP customers will be sharing their experiences of adopting this model, the value derived and how other businesses can benefit.”

The shared services model revolves around replacing manual and disjointed processes by centralising business functions and automating labour-intensive, high-frequency transactions, that result in the rationalising of infrastructure, resources and workflow.

One of the keynote speakers scheduled for the event is Tom Bangemann, Senior Business Advisor at global strategic advisory firm The Hackett Group. According to a study of almost 170 organisations conducted by the advisory firm, 65% of companies using shared services cut their costs by more than 20%, while 27% saved more than 40%.

“This is but one of the many pieces of evidence that support our view that shared services can be applied successfully in multinational or multidivisional organisations that have the scope to rationalise services such as payroll, finance and accounting, procurement and so forth,” says Shaw.

SAP itself has applied the shared services model across the Middle East Africa region for the management and delivery of its HR, financials and procurement functions. Marcel Vollmer, Vice-President Global Finance Projects – SAP AG, who is responsible for implementing and managing this in the region, will be contributing his insight into how shared services can be applied to the benefit of large organisations.

Shaw says presentations will discuss not only the technology supporting the shared services environment, but also the ‘soft issues’ such as the organisational and workflow changes required to enable the changeover to more cost-effective internal service delivery.
