Johannesburg — SAP’s First Lego League team, the “SAP Geeks”, has beat off stiff competition to be ranked number two in the world at this year’s Fist Lego League (FLL) World Festival, which took place in Saint Louis, from 27 to 30 April. The SAP Geeks – the only team to represent South Africa – competed against 82 international teams to win the much coveted second place.
The FLL, developed in partnership with the LEGO Company and the USA-based organisation, FIRST, is an international robotics team competition for children. It is designed to introduce kids to the real world of engineering challenges in an exciting and stimulating way, by developing their ability to work in teams, teaching them creative problem solving. The SAP team, which was made up of children from vastly different social backgrounds, took on the challenge head on and with great success.
This year’s competition saw SAP’s team perform better than ever, placing second on the Championship Award and first in both the Gracious Professionalism Award and Inspiration Award.
Franck Cohen, President of SAP EMEA, met with the group during his recent visit to South Africa, during which he expressed his pride in the team’s achievements. “I am excited that the team has done so well. I think that this programme is a fantastic initiative because it gives children the opportunity to apply mathematical and scientific theory in a fun way. I am sure that these children will be equipped with the right skills and knowledge they need to embark on their careers. SAP is extremely proud of the ‘SAP Geeks’ team’s accomplishments thus far.”
Sunil Geness, Corporate Affairs Executive at SAP, added: “SAP regards the development of science and math skills as critical for Africa’s economic competitiveness. This is why SAP is fundamentally involved with the sponsorship of the FLL, because it combines research, presentation, innovative thinking and team work components in a fun-filled environment. We are extremely proud of our team and have high hopes for them in the future.”
