Johannesburg — SAP Africa, the leading provider of business software, has declared its support of the 6th Science Centre World Congress (6SCWC) with a cheque handover of R725 000 to the Director of Science & Technology, Dr Phil Mjwara, which took place yesterday at the Department of Science and Technology, in Pretoria.
“SAP Africa has for many years supported programmes that have a focus on education, particularly mathematics, science, information technology, and youth entrepreneurship,” says SAP Africa’s Managing Director Pfungwa Serima.
“We’re particularly proud of projects such as the First Lego League, in which teams from SAP Africa have performed exceedingly well over the last few years, proving that good science and maths education really mean that South Africa’s youth can compete with the best in the world. “We also support the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, in Johannesburg, the Cape Town Science Centre, the Namibian Science and Engineering Fair, and SAP has also hosted more than 20 students at SAP headquarters recently.
“The decision to be part of SCWA was an easy one as it resonates strongly with the key pillars of SAP’s global corporate social responsibility strategy, with a focus on education – in particular mathematics and science education on all levels,” continues Serima. “By supporting the Sixth Science Centre Congress, we believe that we will be contributing to the advancement of science for people of all walks of life, and ultimately to the economic benefit of the masses across Africa.”
This is the first time in history that the SCWC will be held in Africa, and it promises to bring together science centre leaders from all over the world to discuss collaboration and to provide an opportunity for professional interchange and international networking.
Upon taking receipt of the cheque, the Director General of Science and Technology, Dr Phil Mjwara, said: “We are delighted that SAP has joined forces with us to host the SCWC. Over the years we have witnessed SAP’s involvement with government in general, and particularly with my department around the areas of critical skills development in subjects such as science and maths. SAP shares our passion for using science and technology as a key driving force for innovation and the revitalisation of communities and economies.”
Rudi Hoorak, Vice-Chairperson of SAASTEC, concludes: “The conference promises to be a tremendous boost for science centre development in Africa. The 6SCWC will bring leading science centre and museum experts to the continent for the first time, and focus international attention on the need to invest in science centre development in Africa.
