SAP Supports Lewa Safaricom “Run Wild” Marathon to Encourage Smart Physical Activities for a Healthy Community

The innovation journey of a well-run business starts with a healthy team

NAIROBI, Kenya — SAP East Africa announced its sponsorship of and participation in the Tusk’s 18th Annual Lewa Safaricom Marathon taking place at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, on Saturday, June 24th, 2017. The marathon gives runners from around the world the opportunity to compete in an internationally acclaimed event while running through one of Africa’s most breathtaking wildlife conservancies.

A group of SAP employees will be among the 1,000 runners from over 20 different countries participating in an event that Runner’s World has listed in its Top Ten Must Do Marathon list.

“SAP is excited to pledge its support towards this sporting initiative which has contributed significantly towards community projects across Kenya, using wildlife conservancy as a catalyst for alleviating poverty, reducing conflict, and improving education and livelihoods in rural areas rich in biodiversity,” says Gilbert Saggia, Managing Director: East Africa at SAP Africa. “In addition to our sponsorship of KSH 700,000 we are donating FitBit health performance tracking devices to ensure that employees remain fit throughout the marathon and run well.”

Lack of physical activity is a major health threat to Africa’s growing population, requiring innovative interventions from both private and public sector organisations. “We believe our support of events such as this contribute to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals as well as Kenya Vision 2030 goals, especially in terms of improving the basic health of Kenyan citizens by the year 2030. With the World Health Organization classifying physical inactivity and obesity as the fourth and fifth leading causes of global mortality, it is imperative we promote a healthy population free of chronic diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and psychosocial problems,” says Saggia.

Saggia believes organisations can play an important role in eliminating health issues such as depression and disability that are crippling the African economy. “By creating a digitally healthy working environment that promotes work-life balance, and encouraging workers to take part in sporting activities such as the Tusk’s Safaricom Marathon, companies can make a meaningful contribution to a healthy workforce, and healthy population. SAP encourages a healthy environment by promoting physical activity among employees, customers, and partners. We believe that, just as a business needs a healthy environment to drive innovation and growth, so employees require healthy habits to avoid preventable diseases.”

Five ways to running a marathon like running a business:

1. Form is critical – just like with running a marathon, a business needs to run simple by removing complexity and focusing on industry best-practice to win.
2. Size doesn’t matter – runners of any size and shape can complete a marathon, just like businesses of all sizes can build their future on the SAP digital business suite.
3. You need to plan ahead – runners need to know when to slow down and up the tempo by knowing the lay of the route. Businesses can similarly gain a view of their entire landscape by leveraging SAP’s expertise in 25 different industries across 12 lines of business.
4. You have to sweat your assets – runners leverage their strengths to make it to the finish line. By implementing a digital core with predictive analytics capabilities, businesses running SAP can extract value from their data to drive innovation and success.
5. Experience matters – it’s rarely the youngest runners who win marathons. With 45 years of global business experience, SAP gives businesses deep industry knowledge that delivers a distinct competitive advantage.
