As organizations ready themselves to master the digital economy, a powerful data management framework is crucial for maintaining the highly secure and agile environment that’s needed to drive business innovation.
To help our customers achieve this, we announced the launch of SAP HANA Data Management Suite, an open and governed data platform designed to orchestrate and manage enterprise business data within multi-cloud and hybrid environments.
Let’s take an inside look at the intelligent components that make up this powerful end-to-end data management suite.
At its core, the SAP HANA Data Management Suite is a next-generation solution for businesses looking to combat the pervasive and often damaging struggles of this data rich era — data sprawl, data entropy, security and governance, and maintaining trusted data.
To explain what this new solution consists of, let’s start by reviewing what SAP HANA Data Management Suite is not. It’s not a completely cloud-based solution. Most organizations continue to house upwards of 80 percent of their enterprise data on premises, which is why the SAP HANA Data Management Suite is a hybrid of on-premises and cloud-based technologies that are integrated — by design — to create a comprehensive solution.
The four key components of SAP HANA Data Management Suite include both the on-premises and ‘as-a-service’ offerings of SAP Data Hub, SAP HANA, and SAP Enterprise Architecture Designer, as well as the SAP Cloud Platform Big Data Services. The combination of these solutions will deliver enterprise security, maximum governance, holistic lineage and traceability, central monitoring, and a comprehensive central metadata understanding — working together to create a whole that is even more powerful than the sum of its parts. And that whole — the SAP HANA Data Management Suite — is the foundation for building intelligent digital enterprises.

There are a number of important ways that the SAP HANA Data Management Suite differentiates itself from every other data management solution on the market.
Centralized Metadata Management
First, SAP Data Hub creates a central metadata management catalog that incorporates not only the unified data catalog of both cloud and on-premises data, but will also include the crucial awareness of business processes and context, along with industry models and content that has become an SAP hallmark. This built-in knowledge empowers organizations to not just collect metadata but to know how to use and manage it in a way that maximizes its value.
Unlike other data pipeline products that start at point A and stop at point B, SAP Data Hub can bring a process in and create a true hub, with a multi-directional flow of information that can go from point A to points B, C, D, and F. SAP Data Hub will soon be available as its own cloud-based service.
Enterprise Architecture Tooling
The SAP Enterprise Architecture Designer can be deployed for conceptual, logical, and physical modeling and is able to work with SAP and non-SAP landscapes. The Web application creates documentation of an organization’s architecture, which provides a holistic view of what’s going on across the entire heterogeneous data landscape. For even more powerful advancement, these tools will also soon be fueled with SAP industry-specific modelling content.
Cloud Portability
The SAP Cloud Platform, SAP HANA service, a component of the SAP HANA Data Management Suite, allows organizations to build applications and perform analysis in the cloud on a single copy of data. Compatible with other editions of SAP HANA to move applications and data freely across the cloud and on premises, the SAP HANA service is now available for consumption via SAP Cloud Platform on Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform. This type of cloud portability is vital and central to the SAP HANA Data Management Suite strategy; users are not locked in and can use data management services across multiple cloud platforms.
Security and Data Protection
When it comes to security and privacy, SAP HANA Data Management Suite sets itself apart with real-time data anonymization features and tools that will facilitate the work not only of data scientists, who can securely set up analytic scenarios, but also of the data protection officer, a prominent position gaining in importance by the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) ruling.
Open Source Support
SAP HANA Data Management Suite prides itself on being an open model, allowing users to integrate with multiple open source compute engines. It will feature automation and operationalized machine learning across the suite’s components with TensorFlow, Spark ML, Python, R, and integration with SAP Leonardo Machine Learning Foundation. Integration with Jupyter Notebook for easy and secure, self-service data science is also on the horizon.
SAP HANA Data Management Suite leverages the combined strength of SAP Data Hub, SAP HANA, SAP Enterprise Architecture Designer, and Big Data services from SAP, and integrates them by design for a full-service solution that solves the data management concerns that plague today’s organizations. The integrated, hybrid solutions that the SAP HANA Data Management Suite offers — differentiated by industry context, portability, open machine learning, pipelining, and security and privacy features — also lay the foundation for the intelligent enterprises of tomorrow.
