{"id":141771,"date":"2021-01-28T07:57:50","date_gmt":"2021-01-28T07:57:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.sap.com\/africa\/?p=141771"},"modified":"2023-09-27T18:15:14","modified_gmt":"2023-09-27T18:15:14","slug":"african-code-challenge-all-female-top-3-use-tech-to-change-the-future-of-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.sap.com\/africa\/2021\/01\/african-code-challenge-all-female-top-3-use-tech-to-change-the-future-of-education\/","title":{"rendered":"AfriCAN Code Challenge, All Female TOP 3 use Tech to Change the Future of Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>After a rigorous round of judging for this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/africacodeweek.org\/join\/african-code-challenge-rules\/\">AfriCAN Code Challenge<\/a>, SAP Africa Code Week\u2019s top 10 winners were announced and special highlights include the top 3 being all-female, aged 10 &#8211; 16 years, with Soliyana, 10 years old from Ethiopia as the Pan-African winner of the competition.<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-141772 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/news.sap.com\/africa\/files\/2021\/01\/28\/ACW-ACC-Logo-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.sap.com\/africa\/files\/2021\/01\/28\/ACW-ACC-Logo-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/news.sap.com\/africa\/files\/2021\/01\/28\/ACW-ACC-Logo-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/news.sap.com\/africa\/files\/2021\/01\/28\/ACW-ACC-Logo-200x200.png 200w, https:\/\/news.sap.com\/africa\/files\/2021\/01\/28\/ACW-ACC-Logo-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/news.sap.com\/africa\/files\/2021\/01\/28\/ACW-ACC-Logo.png 1063w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/>&#8220;Despite the Covid-disruption for schools which impacted hundreds of millions of youth across Africa, children from more than 54 countries stepped-up to share their vision of the future of education,\u201d says Africa Code Week\u2019s Global Coordinator, Olajide Ademola Ajayi.<\/p>\n<p>Ajayi continues to say that the youth engagement throughout the challenge was incredibly inspiring, \u201cWhile there can ultimately be only one winner, the quality of entries at the inaugural AfriCAN Code Challenge encouraged hope and confidence for Africa&#8217;s future, shaped by the largest youth population in the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Launched by <a href=\"https:\/\/africacodeweek.org\/en\/\">SAP Africa Code Week<\/a> and partners <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\">UNESCO<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishaid.ie\">Irish Aid<\/a>, the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.adeanet.org\">ADEA<\/a>) and Jokkolabs in September 2020, the AfriCAN Code Challenge is a pan-African coding competition where youth aged 8 &#8211; 16 were tasked with coding a game using the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scratch.mit.edu\">Scratch<\/a> programming language to answer the question: &#8220;How will your tech change the future of education?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During the AfriCAN Code Challenge youth were able to enter alone or in teams of up to five people, and entries featured a two-minute YouTube clip showcasing how their game works and why it should be considered a winning entry. The unique initiative and entry mechanism called upon the children\u2019s ability to design a project that would solve a community-issue, code it, and communicate it.<\/p>\n<p>During the opening rounds of the challenge, participation reached across 40 countries and featured 100 project video clips, only the top three entries from 36 countries made it into the continental final, followed by 22 countries in the final judging stage.<\/p>\n<p>Selected by a high-level jury composed of key Africa Code Week delegates and STEM education experts, the top three of the AfriCAN Code Challenge was allocated to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First place: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/y-_3D7Nui2A\">Ethiopia<\/a> \u2013 Mathstainement by Soliyana, 10 years old<\/li>\n<li>Second place: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kI_QJgDxUN0\">South Africa<\/a> \u2013 Space Quest by Kayla, 15 years old<\/li>\n<li>Third place: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ycJcCU_mTiE&amp;feature=youtu.be\">Algeria<\/a> \u2013 &#8216;Welcome to the Best School&#8217; by Sarah, 16 years old<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Followed by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T47c3yRs4cI&amp;feature=youtu.be\">Mauritius<\/a> \u2013 E-Bin<\/li>\n<li>5: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-Or8XuudclQ\">Nigeria<\/a> \u2013 I-Learn<\/li>\n<li>6: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-Pd3mQFgUF0\">Tunisia<\/a> \u2013 Warrior<\/li>\n<li>7: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/YC3zbHx3sTE\">Morocco<\/a> \u2013 Abdelilah Hashas<\/li>\n<li>8: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/fjwTYmQWGJs\">Zimbabwe<\/a> \u2013 HeadStart Game<\/li>\n<li>9: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/OvANIjm0ils\">Rwanda<\/a> \u2013 Math Puzzles for Kids<\/li>\n<li>10: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JMLzLII448M&amp;feature=youtu.be\">Ivory Coast<\/a> \u2013 Easy Preterit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141773\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141773\" style=\"width: 282px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-141773\" src=\"https:\/\/news.sap.com\/africa\/files\/2021\/01\/28\/IMG_0017-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"282\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.sap.com\/africa\/files\/2021\/01\/28\/IMG_0017-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.sap.com\/africa\/files\/2021\/01\/28\/IMG_0017-356x200.jpg 356w, https:\/\/news.sap.com\/africa\/files\/2021\/01\/28\/IMG_0017-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.sap.com\/africa\/files\/2021\/01\/28\/IMG_0017.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 282px) 100vw, 282px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141773\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">First place: Ethiopia&#8217;s \u2013 Mathstainement by Soliyana, 10 years old<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The jury also awarded two superior prizes for \u2018Outstanding Government Support\u2019 to Morocco and Nigeria, where the competition was implemented by the Ministries of Education, and received strong institutional support.<\/p>\n<p>Claire Gillissen-Duval, Director of EMEA Corporate Social Responsibility and Co-founder of Africa Code Week at SAP celebrates the joyous occasion, \u201cThe all-female top three proves that the future of tech cannot be envisioned without girls.
