This app will help you ring in the New Year in style. A countdown timer will ensure you don’t miss the big moment. And when the clock finally strikes midnight, you can blow into the microphone on your iPhone or iPod Touch to hear a realistic party-horn sound. Watch your screen to see the horn unroll as you blow. You can also listen to the traditional New Year song “Auld Lang Syne”.

The “New Year’s Blowout Horn! And 2013 Countdown!” app is compatible with all versions of the iPhone and iPod Touch that have an external microphone. You can buy it from the Apple App Store at a cost of $0.99.

5. New Year’s Oracle

Are you brave enough to look into the future? This app recreates the ritual of telling fortunes by interpreting the shapes made by molten lead when it is poured from a spoon into cold water. You can choose whether to melt the lead over a candle flame or using a gas torch. The app’s graphics are detailed and life-like, and they simulate your actions realistically: For example, you tip your cell phone to tip the spoon. The molten lead forms completely random shapes, so you get a different one each time.  An integrated encyclopedia helps you interpret what the shapes mean.

This free app contains three pieces of lead. Extra lead pieces are purchased separately (a tin of 24 costs $0.99).

“New Year’s Oracle 2013” is available from the Apple App Store.
