As the winner of two major championships and 17 LPGA Tour events, American golfer Dottie Pepper knows a thing or two about what it takes to be a winner. She joined the LPGA Tour in 1988, and her 19-under-par finish in the 1999 Nabisco Dinah Shores victory still stands as the lowest score in relation to par in a major championship.
My golf league, the Boston chapter of EWGA, kicked off the season last weekend with a brunch that featured Pepper as the guest speaker. With spring almost here, it was an inspiring morning for aspiring golfers like me—snow-covered Boston notwithstanding. These are some of the observations she made about her journey to become a top athlete.
Losing opens up new doors to winning. As Pepper told it, her father Don was a major league baseball player who appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a “rookie to watch”, along with Hall of Famer Johnny Bench, in 1968. Although her dad fell victim to the so-called SI cover curse, Pepper emphasized how he instilled in her the values needed to achieve her goals.
Innovation happens when you reject the status quo. Pepper urges golf courses to attract new players by thinking differently about programs. Encourage entire families to play with targeted programs by age or skill level that run concurrently. If more people in the family have the chance to get involved, interest and participation soars.
If you’re unhappy with a situation, quit whining and go in with a plan.Pepper was sanguine when talking about the controversial women membership policies of Augusta National Golf Club. Rhetorically asking if membership atAugusta is really what most women want, she suggested a more worthwhile battle would be approaching local golf clubs and making a business case for allowing anyone to play at any time. Change happens when the benefits for everyone are clear.
Stay focused. In response to a question from the audience about her thoughts on sports psychology, Pepper opined that what matters is how you manage yourself regardless of what’s going on around you. Execute on the fundamentals and ignore the chirping birds.
After retiring early due to injuries, Pepper went on to a successful golf broadcasting career on NBC and The Golf Channel. She’s also co-authored a children’s book series entitled, “Bogey Tees Off,’ that tells the story of Bogey Ballton, a range ball whose ambition is to reach the PGA Tour. The book was developed to introduce children and their families to bond through the game of golf. It promotes life lessons and values on and off the course including respect, responsibility, being truthful, and never forgetting where you come from. The overarching objective is to teach kids to do something meaningful with their lives.
As I walked out the door that afternoon with my autographed Bogie head cover, I thought that these are lessons applicable to any workplace, including my own at SAP.
