At SAPPHIRE NOW 2011, SAP defined the main functions of SAP Sales OnDemand in three terms: collaboration, communication, and real-time analysis. The company also described its new on-demand solution as “people-centric” – that is, tailored more to users’ needs and less to particular processes.

SAP Sales OnDemand gives sales employees online access to the information they need most, such as on accounts, leads, and closed deals. It is ideally suited to any smaller company looking for a solution just for its sales department, rather than a comprehensive application like SAP Customer Relationship Management.

The solution supports full integration into SAP ERP, which means major corporations can also use SAP Sales OnDemand to interface with their subsidiaries. Any sales orders and invoices processed in SAP ERP can thus flow into SAP’s new offering. Changes you make in SAP Sales OnDemand are then synced back into SAP ERP.

SAP Sales OnDemand is accessible by Web browser; you can start the Web client by clicking on the corresponding icon on your desktop. Since your data is stored safe and sound at an SAP data center, you don’t need to install or configure any additional hardware or software.

Social media functions for the office

In addition to its main menu – which enables you to access data on accounts, contacts, leads, opportunities, activities, analyses, competitors, products, and employees – SAP Sales OnDemand offers a number of social media functions for the office. Much like Twitter, the homepage displays all of your colleagues’ latest status updates. By clicking on an employee, you can view his or her department, contact information, and current projects.

Depending on whom you’re working with on a particular project, you can also “follow” certain colleagues and exchange messages with them directly. Meanwhile, special filter functions make it possible to restrict the updates displayed to those relevant to you.

All in all, SAP Sales OnDemand gives you ways to access your information, oversee your sales activities, and manage customer data in real time.

Keeping an eye on customer data

However, your colleagues aren’t the only ones you can keep an eye on with SAP Sales OnDemand. Just one click will call up information on the activities, sales, and recent updates pertaining to a particular customer. Meanwhile, special dashboards facilitate BI analyses, which in turn enable you to compare current situations with the previous month, generate reports, and scrutinize sales performance, profit, and loss.

In addition to SAP ERP, SAP Sales OnDemand also integrates seamlessly into Microsoft Outlook. Upon opening your e-mail client, you can thus access all of your contacts, opportunities, activities, and status updates, as well as import e-mail attachments directly into SAP Sales OnDemand and allocate them to the corresponding projects. A pop-up window at the bottom of the desktop shows when such entries have been synced to the solution.

Ready for the road

Since sales employees are often on the go, a mobile version of SAP Sales OnDemand is also available. Optimized for iPhone, iPad, and BlackBerry, this version also displays a feed of your colleagues’ latest status updates and gives you access to all of your accounts, contacts, leads, and opportunities. The inclusion of location-based services, meanwhile, enables SAP Sales OnDemand to identify where you are and provide directions to your next business meeting, or display partner companies in your current area.

Pricing and availability

SAP Sales OnDemand has been released in Austria, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It comes with a monthly fee of U.S.$40-80 per user, with the price depending on the number of total users and the duration of use.

SAP has also announced its intention to release a new update for the solution every six months; the next version is thus scheduled for the end of 2011.
