Manufacturing.

If the word still evokes Charlie Chaplin’s 1936 film “Modern Times” – visions of his Little Tramp character struggling as a factory assembly line worker during the Great Depression – it’s time to fast-forward to our own modern times and beyond.

According to IDC’s Worldwide Manufacturing 2012 Top 10 Predictions, “Manufacturers will be really busy in designing their factories of the future…for a massive change…”

SAP’s Martin Mrugal quantifies the impact of this trend. “Today’s new technology and how it is applied to the design, production, transportation and distribution of a company’s products will set it apart in the eyes of the consumer, creating the most powerful and lasting competitive advantage a company can have.”

To keep us future-focused, SAP’s Pradeep Amladi’s recent Forbes.com blog [“Will your next car drive itself”] cites this now-classic Fleetwood Mac 1977 lyric: “Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow. Don’t stop, it’ll soon be here…” Ah, they were visionaries!
