SAP R/3 Enterprise is the next release of SAP R/3, SAP’s leading ERP solution, and is based on a new Web services-compliant technology platform, the SAP® Web Application Server (WAS), which is also part of the technology infrastructure for the mySAP.com® family of e-business solutions. In addition to the Web Application Server, SAP R/3 Enterprise includes the SAP R/3 Enterprise Core and the SAP R/3 Enterprise Extensions. SAP plans to keep the R/3 Enterprise Core (based on the current SAP R/3 release 4.6C) stable, while the SAP R/3 Enterprise Extensions will undergo annual release cycles that contain new business functionality. The stability of the SAP R/3 Enterprise Core, combined with the selective upgrade options of the SAP R/3 Enterprise Extensions, will ensure that customers who implement the solution have a strong, stable ERP solution with the flexibility to adapt to changing requirements.

“SAP has architected the SAP R/3 Enterprise infrastructure into a three-layer system that gives customers the power to determine exactly which parts of the solution they’d like to modify or upgrade, without spending time or incurring cost on areas deemed less critical to the success of their business,” said Claus Heinrich, executive board member of SAP AG. “This approach helps customers to maximize existing investment in IT infrastructures while providing a clear roadmap to the future of their solution management.”

“We selected SAP R/3 Enterprise for the new, stand-alone functionality it offers in warehouse management and task and resource management,” said John Lane, liaison manager, SAP Competence Centre, Sony Europe. “We made this decision after conducting intensive comparisons with alternative vendor solutions over a period of several months. Among the compelling reasons we chose SAP R/3 Enterprise for this de-centralized warehouse implementation is its clear integration with our single European R/3 ERP system and the development, support, and technical expertise in SAP solutions that already exists in our organization.”

UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, has been using SAP R/3 since 1999 and plans to go live with the new enterprise solution over the coming months. “We are having a very smooth upgrade to SAP R/3 Enterprise,” said André Spatz, CIO of UNICEF. “SAP’s carefully managed ramp-up process has allowed us to resolve upgrade issues quickly, thereby lowering our total cost of ownership. SAP and UNICEF’s shared interest in making this project a success has further strengthened our partnership.”

The German SAP R/3 user group (DSAG) and the Americas’ SAP Users’ Group (ASUG) have contributed feedback on the ongoing development of SAP R/3 Enterprise and have worked with SAP to provide continuous improvement to the upgrade process. “We appreciate that SAP has listened so closely to its customers during the development of SAP R/3 Enterprise,” said Alfons Wahlers, chair of the DSAG. “We are sure SAP customers will benefit from SAP’s flexible new upgrade options, which tailors each upgrade strategy to the individual user. We believe this is the best way to help customers reduce their total cost of ownership.”

“We are facing a situation in which CIOs are struggling with tight budgets and a need to justify expenditures,” said Derek Prior, research director, Gartner, Inc. “Under these conditions, ERP systems must be stable, high-performing, and flexible to reduce costs associated with maintenance and upgrades. In addition, companies should select solutions that offer an open technology infrastructure, since open infrastructures allow for continuous growth without posing challenges inherent to heterogeneous systems and proprietary applications.”
