From sales employees who mostly work at offsite locations to managers who rush from one meeting to the next with only a few scattered moments at their desk in between – the workplace is now anywhere and everywhere workers happen to be. With the release of six new mobile apps for HR processes, SAP is enabling employees to carry out essential business tasks from their smartphones and iPads and is making companies more efficient in the process.

All six apps are now generally available. Depending on the app, these solutions are available for the iPad, iPhone, and BlackBerry. All of the apps run on the Sybase Unwired Platform (SUP 2.1).

To use the new HR apps, you need to be running SAP ERP HCM in the back end. If you want to use the app on an iPad or iPhone, you need to have iOS 4.0 or higher. The supported languages are: English, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian.

On the following pages you’ll find an overview of the six apps listed below as well as links to see demos of the apps in action:

  • SAP Employee Lookup
  • SAP Leave Request
  • SAP Timesheet
  • SAP HR Approvals
  • SAP Manager Insight
  • SAP Interview Assistant

SAP Employee Lookup

This app allows users to access to any employee’s details, such as their extension number, email address, and office location, as well as any organizational information that is stored in the SAP ERP Human Capital Management (SAP ERP HCM) solution.

Let’s say, for example, that you mostly work in the field but often need to get in touch with employees back at the office. It can be a hassle, though, to make sure you always have the necessary information in your phone’s contact list. With this app, you can quickly and easily get access to any employee’s details without having to hunt down old emails in your inbox or navigate the intranet from a small smartphone screen. If the matter is pressing and you can’t reach the intended employee, you can even see who works on their team and who their manager is, so you can get in touch with someone else.

SAP Leave Request

With this app, employees can create new leave requests and review old ones from their iPhone or BlackBerry smartphone. Sure, it’s not that difficult to create a leave request in the on-premise SAP ERP HCM solution, but now employees can carry out this task whenever they have a spare moment no matter where they are. Mobile devices and apps like this one ensure that employees, and by extension companies, are able to run as efficiently as possible.

In just a few steps, and within the familiar user interface of your smartphone, you can create a new leave request and send it to your manager for approval. The app includes several categories of leave, such as: annual leave, sick leave, half-day leave, offsite work, and educational leave. You can also review your past requests and edit or delete them if necessary.

SAP Timesheet

This mobile time entry app is especially useful for employees who need to keep track of their hours in the field and time spent on various projects. In the past, employees who worked mostly offsite had to fill out a timesheet at their desk several hours after the fact, making it nearly impossible to accurately capture the amount of time spent on a particular project or traveling from one site to the next. A mobile app like this one enables employees to update their timesheet as they are working, which ensures more accurate time entry.

When you open the app, you can choose from several types of work, for example: administration, internal projects, community service, partner support, or onsite demonstration. Once you enter the number of hours spent on a certain type of work, it will appear color-coded in your timesheet, giving you an at-a-glance breakdown of your hours.

SAP Timesheet runs on iPhone and BlackBerry smartphones. Here, you’ll find a video of the app in action. Here, you can download the app for free from iTunes.

SAP HR Approvals

SAP HR Approvals enables managers to review and make decisions about employees’ HR-related requests directly from their iPhone or BlackBerry. With this app, managers receive notifications of all employee leave requests. They can quickly select the requests they want to approve or reject and then complete the task in just a few steps. Managers can also choose to add a comment to the request.

Other examples of HR-related requests include expense report approvals, trip approval requests, and further workflow approvals. Managers can review and make decisions on all these requests with the SAP HR Approvals app.

SAP Manager Insight

This app enables HR Business Partners and HR specialists to be more mobile within the company and meet managers face-to-face. The app, which runs on the iPad, contains extensive HR data, reports, and KPIs, allowing HR personnel to talk in depth with managers about their teams.

For example, when you open the app, you can view reports on the headcount, performance, and budget for particular managers. If you select one of those reports, let’s say, headcount, you’ll be able to slice and dice the data according to site location, age range, male to female ratio, and job family, e.g. developers, solution managers, managers, and assistants.

SAP Manager Insight supports the collaboration between HR personnel and managers on HR topics and helps them keep track of further actions. Click here for a video of the app in action. Here, you can download the app for free.

SAP Interview Assistant

The SAP Interview Assistant app runs on the iPad and supports managers during the interview and hiring process. The app runs on top of the SAP E-Recruiting application, a fully Web-enabled, end-to-end recruiting solution which is part of the SAP ERP HCM solution. This means that managers are able to access application documents stored in SAP ERP HCM directly from the app. Further, managers can take notes and capture information in the app during interviews and later the data is integrated back into SAP ERP HCM. The app also facilitates collaboration between managers and HR once the best candidate has been selected, ensuring a quick hiring process.
