Lekkerland employs 4,300 workers in its 18 sites, including its headquarters in Frechen near Cologne, Germany. In fiscal year 2004 revenues amounted to more than EUR 5 billion. “Our logistics processes are to a large extent oriented towards the needs of convenience retailers. In this project – and with SAP LES – we are laying the cornerstone for the further effective upgrading of our logistic processes. The SAP know-how of the itelligence consultants provided us with ideal support for this project,” says Wolfgang Scheid, Managing Director of Lekkerland Information Systems.
After the successful kickoff of the pilot project at the Lekkerland warehouse in Kassel-Lohfelden, Germany, the rollout will begin at the German sites. The warehouse, delivery and data volumes which are processed by SAP LES are enormous. Lekkerland supplies about 60,000 business customers in Germany with an extensive range of sweets, snacks, convenience goods, ice cream, frozen foods, baked goods, fresh produce, drinks, tobacco products, telephone calling cards and non-food items. The SAP LES system, which was implemented jointly with the itelligence consultants, must handle a data volume of an average of 1.5 million “pick positions” per day.
Mastering this high volume of data is accomplished by completely mapping the value-added processes and the entire document flow under SAP. Dispensing with paper documents as far as possible increases the data transparency, and in addition offers Lekkerland improved possibilities for support through the internal SAP Competence Center as well as providing an essential simplification of processes – such as inventory management or order picking.
Not only does the new logistics system improve productivity throughout Lekkerland’s entire process chain, it also supports, for example, use of the pick-by-voice technology – a document-free, voice-controlled system for order picking – in all warehouses. Ulrich Gebauer, the itelligence project manager for Lekkerland explains that “the LES project at Lekkerland was accomplished with great success, thanks to the professional and effective teamwork of the IT department and the technical department at Lekkerland, and the external consultants from itelligence. Lekkerland can now better serve its customers with this ‘best-inclass logistics’.”
