Support for Innovative Ideas by 50 Children in FIRST LEGO League
SAP Japan to Help Three Teams Enter National Contest

TokyoSAP Japan Co., Ltd. announced today that it has implemented its first social contribution program, in accordance with the activity policy of SAP as a whole.

The first stage of this social contribution program was participation in FIRST LEGO League (FLL), one of the world’s biggest robot competitions, which was developed by the non-profit organization For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) and The LEGO Group as a practical robot engineering program.

SAP Japan decided to participate because the company concurs with the FLL mission, which is: “As well as communicating to the upcoming generation, through competition, the fact that science and technology are interesting and fun, proactively help children to discover their own creativity in the process of solving various problems while cooperating with team members toward a common goal.”

In FLL, the 15 SAP Japan employees participated as mentors and coaches to about 50 children, aged 9-15(up to junior high), in five teams. As a result, in the FLL Kanto contest, which took place on November 20, teams supported by SAP Japan ranked first, second, and third.

The 15 SAP employees taking part in FLL worked together with the children every weekend for five months from this July. Based on the theme of this year’s FLL contest, which was “Ocean Odyssey,” each team used LEGO MINDSTORMS FOR SCHOOLS technology to build a completely autonomous robot and tackle ocean-related research activities, with the following two goals:

Robot contest: Plan, design, program, assemble, test, and upgrade a robot that can carry out various ocean-related missions, and develop a high-performance robot that can rationally carry out the mission in the contest.

Research project: At the investigative stage, use the Internet to experience the diversity of the world’s oceans and understand the importance of conserving that diversity for future generations. Exchange opinions with team mentors. Talk with researchers, visit ocean science institutes and libraries, and put together a convincing research presentation regarding the problems and possibilities facing today’s world.

In the Kanto contest on November 20, rankings were based on overall scores for scientific investigation of the world’s oceans, presentations on robot design and teamwork, and the results of a tournament-style robot competition. Three teams mentored and coached by SAP employees – SAP Edisons, SAP Eleven, and SAP Light Bird – came first, second, and third. These three teams will advance to the national contest, which will take place in January 2006.
