With Barry’s appointment, SAP is establishing a global defense and security initiative within its public sector organization to create additional focus and emphasis on security-related solutions. Building on the 2003 release of SAP Security Resource Management, a solution designed to support homeland security agencies, the creation of the new initiative comes as SAP continues to experience momentum in the defense sector. Customers around the globe include the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, Defense Logistics Agency, German Bundeswehr, Defence Command in Denmark and the Department of National Defence in Canada.
Barry has more than 30 years of hands-on experience serving in a variety of command-level positions in the U.S. Air Force, including his tenure as former executive director of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board and director of plans and programs at the Headquarters Air Force Materiel Command. Barry’s notable career includes assignments as a White House fellow at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), service as the White House liaison during the Challenger accident and service as the military assistant to the Secretary of Defense during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and during the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
“Major General John Barry has established a proven track record of improving the size, scope and efficiency of operating units during his tenure in the U.S. Air Force,” said Tom Shirk, president of SAP Global Public Services. “This appointment strengthens our leadership team by incorporating a strategic voice with firsthand knowledge of industry requirements. We are confident that Barry’s broad-based military expertise will be an asset to our organization, our customers and our partners.”
