Latin Code Week 2022 Mexico: teamwork, resilience and entrepreneurship took El Guerrerense to the finals

Mexico City, 21st of July – An organic fertilizer based on coconut fibers and substrates that offers a better balance thanks to all their nutrients and, by their capacity of absorption, significantly reduces demand for water resources. With this proposal, El Guerrerense became the finalist project of Latin Code Week 2022 Mexican edition.

The name of the project refers to Guerrero, a state in the southwest of the country where the family of Vanessa Juárez, the student who created this innovative solution, originated. Her goal was to generate a solution with a positive social impact on both the environment and human health by addressing the intensive use of water resources and chemical fertilizers in agriculture. Vanessa says that this program taught her to turn her ideas into realities and her dreams into sustainable projects: Latin Code Week opened the doors for her project to help many people.

Besides developing her initiative, Vanessa believes that her participation allowed to learn different soft skills: empathy, resilience, creativity, teamwork, leadership and social inclusion. Latin Code Week encouraged her to continue being an entrepreneur and she believes that the mentors encouraged her not to give up.

Latin Code Week is a digital education initiative, co-created by SAP and JA Americas, for young people that seeks to empower Latin American students in technological tools and skills for the future, as well as encouraging them to study careers related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Over the years, the program has reached more than 9,000 students from 11 different countries, with the support of more than 800 mentors.

This year, the program is being launched for the seventh time, starting with the Mexico edition and continuing progressively with the rest of the countries in the region. The first stage consists of a national phase, from which a finalist team is selected, and then a second regional phase, in which the finalists from each country compete. This year’s challenge will be to create innovative solutions that promote the circular economy.

“Searching for a more sustainable development model for our economy and our environment stimulates us to discover new ways to address the relationships between the environment, consumers, businesses and public agencies, while presenting a great potential for the global economy,” remarked Lautaro Spotorno, Director of Communications and Social Responsibility for SAP Latin America South.

“The creativity and imagination of young people can generate ideas capable of solving critical issues in our communities. At the same time, we believe that technology should act as a means rather than an end in itself to bring the potential of our young people to generate a wonderful impact on a large scale. We are proud to celebrate a new edition of Latin Code Week in partnership with SAP because it allows us to inspire our young people to generate incredible solutions to urgent problems,” expressed Leo Martellotto, President of JA Americas.
