Lekkerland Converts SAP Solutions to SAP R/3 Enterprise

In 2004, Lekkerland’s approximately 6,500 employees generated global sales of around EUR 8.5 billion. Work performed for Lekkerland by in-house consultants at Lekkerland Information Systems, Lekkerland’s independent IT company, and itelligence AG’s SAP specialists focused on the rapid release update of SAP R/3 4.0B to SAP R/3 Enterprise, parallel to ongoing day-to-day and project business. Right from the outset, the more than 3,000 individual developments and numerous modifications that had to be made to the SAP standard represented the largest challenge facing the project participants.
The conversion of the complex SAP system landscape and its many subsystems, such as the connection of the HR and BW solutions, the inventory management and control systems, including the archiving and fax connection, as well as a complex customer connection using EDI were further highlights of the major project. Consultancy work performed by itelligence focused on supporting the Lekkerland SAP specialists in project planning and project coordination over the whole of the project duration and on quality assurance in all project phases. The project was even completed one month earlier than planned.
The SAP landscape now works on an HP Superdome Server with 268 GB RAM and a processor performance of 96 GHz, including 14 application servers, and a mirrored system of almost the same size. The SAP solutions came through load testing with more than 1.5 million transactions on the day after the release update with flying colors. In addition to the technical complexity of the project, the success or failure of the release update is determined by the involvement of employees. More than 50 employees were involved in the project team at some point. It took just twelve training consultants only eleven working days to prepare more than 1,500 end users at the head office, the 20 branches and in the Netherlands for the new functionalities of SAP R/3 Enterprise.
The roll-out of SAP R/3 Enterprise to Lekkerland’s Swiss subsidiary is planned for the middle of 2005. Wolfgang Scheid, Managing Director of Lekkerland Information Systems: “This was the smoothest release update that I have experienced in more than 20 years working with SAP. The changeover went so well that our customers did not notice a thing from the very first day. For a project of this size, this is an absolutely extraordinarily positive result.”
