With around 90 branches and affiliated companies, and approximately 14,300 employees, ORLEN is one of the largest Groups in central Europe. ORLEN Deutschland AG, a wholly-owned subsidiary headquartered in Elmshorn, is responsible for the German business activities of the Polish company PKN ORLEN S.A. Under the motto: “Good is not good enough for ORLEN,” ORLEN currently operates 500 gas stations in North Germany and plans further expansion.
Following the merger between BP and Aral in March 2003, which generated major media interest, ORLEN acquired the “Northern package,” comprising 494 gas stations under the Aral, BP, and Eggert Mineraloel brands. The SAP applications and the communication applications used for data exchange in these about 500 gas stations were previously run from the computer center of an Austrian service provider. ORLEN has now chosen itelligence AG as its new service provider. Moving the applications and transferring the data involves a changeover of systems from HPUX to Linux. State-of-the-art hardware with 64-bit technology and a shadow database will be used to operate the highly accessible (99 percent) three-tier system landscape.
itelligence AG will host the operation of the SAP R/3 landscape for 110 users 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A further step will involve the release update to a new SAP platform. Precision, security, and speed are also required by the connected network operator, which links around 500 gas stations to the SAP system. Sales, card transactions, and logistics information is retrieved from all ORLEN gas stations via satellite overnight, and the gas stations are brought up to date – fuel prices are constantly updated. Statements are produced automatically from the information transferred until 5:00 in the morning.
