Many companies today are feeling the pressure to develop and expand their mobile strategies, and to do so, they are turning to the experts: digital natives. For this young generation, accessing news, social media, and business technology via a mobile app is second nature. They have little patience for poor functionality and design, and they are unburdened by “the old way of doing things” mentality. It’s no wonder that technology companies are already vying for their job applications.

With its first ever SAP University App Rumble, the Walldorf-based software company is looking to increase its engagement with this younger generation and tap into their mobile-first mindset. The competition is open to any undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in any major at an accredited U.S. university. Participants are asked to use design thinking to come up with an idea for a mobile application. It should make use of SAP HANA technology and be geared towards one of SAP’s 24 industries.

Videos on SAP HANA and design thinking

Since most university students probably aren’t familiar with SAP HANA or the company’s mobile platform, a Web site has been created with plenty of resources to find out more about the basics of the technology. It also offers a crash course in design thinking. Students can then submit their ideas directly on the Web site, where SAP employees are able to make suggestions for improvement. Thus, students have a chance to fine tune their ideas before the final voting stage.

SAP will then select three finalists to work with developers on a prototype of the app. (Students don’t need to have any programming knowledge themselves.) The finalists also get an all-expenses-paid trip to Orlando, Florida, where they will present their idea at SAPPHIRE NOW. The grand prize winner gets the chance to turn their prototype into a final product.

The period for submitting ideas has just begun. Now is the time to turn your dream app into a reality!

Important deadlines:

  • March 18th: Contest starts. Teams can begin submitting ideas.
  • March 18th – April 3rd: SAP employees review submissions and provide feedback where applicable on an ongoing basis.
  • April 3rd – April 8th: Students should fine tune their ideas for the final judging.
  • April 8th – April 12th: The final judging process takes place.
  • April 17th: Finalists are selected and given details as to the next steps.
  • April 18th – May 14th: Teams build, plan, and create their application with SAP developers. Students also work with SAP to book trip to SAPPHIRE NOW.
  • May 15/16th: Finalists compete at SAPPHIRE NOW, and a winning team is announced.
