mammut tec, created in 2002 following a management buyout of Arova-Mammut AG, manufactures special textile products such as lifting belts, support harnesses and safety ropes. “When safety is important, our textiles are the strongest and the best in the world,” says Managing Director Ruedi Hess, explaining the success of his company, which employs around 60 staff. “We work closely with Swiss research institutes such as ETH and EMPA in order to maintain our competitive edge through continuous innovation. Despite patent protection, this is the only way to keep ahead of our low-cost competitors from the Far East.
A further point in mammut tec’s favor is its considerable production depth. The whole production process, from the yarn to the finished lifting belt sling, is carried out at its plants in Switzerland and Hungary. This puts high demands on planning and production, tasks that must be supported by the corporate software. As the old system no longer met the company’s needs, management decided in spring 2002 to opt for a replacement. As a result of recommendations from other businesses, two solutions were evaluated. The eventual winner was an industry solution for production plants – the mySAP All-in-One software Easy3Fertiger from TDS MultiVision.
Implementation in three months
“Like many other SMBs, we had quite a blinkered view of SAP,” says Hess. “But today we see things differently. Easy3Fertiger was implemented as a standardized industry solution with minimal adaptation costs in only three months and we managed to avoid large-scale investment thanks to software rental in the ASP model.”
Once the introductory work had been completed in January 2003, Easy3Fertiger was able to control all the business processes, including planning, production, logistics, sales, purchases and HR. The software also meets all the customer requirements. Improved planning is increasing delivery performance, evaluation tools provide a basis for well-founded management decisions and automatic data coordination with the second production site in Hungary is guaranteed.
SAP partner TDS MultiVision played an important role in the successful implementation of the software. According to Hess, the consultants approached the project with “a great deal of expertise and a good understanding of the SMB market. “The next phase will utilize a further key feature of Easy3Fertiger – namely electronic integration of customers, especially of the large European construction and DIY chains and of course suppliers. Hess is even considering an online shop for business customers. But despite all this euphoria, he has not forgotten where his company’s strengths lie – in constant innovation and the production of top-class products that help to keep ahead of the competition. And having the right ERP software to rely on gives him the security he needs to achieve this.
