There’s no denying the success of SAP HANA. In 2011, the in-memory application generated sales of around €160 million for SAP. It has been officially available since June 2011 and created quite a stir in its first six months of existence.
With SAP HANA, SAP offers something completely revolutionary: The combination of hardware and software enables large numbers of data records – and even databases – to be loaded into and stored in the working memory, where they are available for evaluations. This means analyses can be performed even more rapidly. What used to take 15 hours can now be mastered by SAP HANA in four seconds. With SAP HANA, data can be evaluated 10,000 times faster. Vishal Sikka, member of the SAP Executive Board and responsible for the technology and innovation areas, compares it with a journey from Palo Alto to Boston that takes just six minutes.
Guides, videos, and downloads – SAP HANA Experience
SAP HANA is classified as follows:
- SAP HANA platform
- SAP HANA appliance software
- The SAP HANA database
- SAP HANA studio
The “SAP HANA Experience” Web site is designed to provide more information about the in-memory appliance. It is divided into three areas: Learn, Try, and Implement. Each area is then subdivided into Overview, Content, People, and Subspaces and Projects.
In the Learn section, visitors will find blogs about SAP HANA and useful information about installation and configuration. Under People, users can connect up with each other – like on Facebook – and put their profile data online, such as their professional role and the name of their company.
On the Web site, you’ll also find a whole host of information about the three SAP HANA products: SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse component powered by SAP HANA, SAP CO-PA Accelerator software, and SAP Smart Meter Analytics software.
Three SAP HANA products
With SAP NetWeaver BW 7.3 on SAP HANA, customers can seamlessly migrate their data warehouse to the SAP HANA platform. The application accelerates the loading of data into SAP NetWeaver BW. The traditional database layer below SAP NetWeaver BW is replaced by the SAP HANA database. This meant, for example, that the customer Red Bull managed to reduce a database of 1.5 terabytes to 250 and 300 gigabytes. With a special tool, data can be uploaded to SAP HANA using cut-and-paste to the clipboard. As a result, analyses become possible in real time.
SAP CO-PA Accelerator is designed for customers of SAP ERP. It enables real-time insights into customer data and profit margins. SAP CRM users can enjoy the benefits of SAP Customer Segmentation Accelerator. With the solutions, you can, for example, find the decisive 20% of products that constitute 80% of your profit. You can get up and running with SAP CO-PA Accelerator within a few weeks, because it is available as a rapid deployment solution. At Colgate, it went live after just eight weeks’ implementation time.
SAP Smart Meter Analytics is designed for utility companies and large energy companies. A smart meter device measures the energy consumption of each individual household. Every year, this can result in up to 400 gigabytes of data. The data records are then evaluated using the software. Utility companies can differentiate between different types of building or customer segments. The software runs on the SAP HANA platform. This enables data to be analyzed in real time, as with the other two applications.

Under Try, you can try out the SAP HANA applications such as SAP CO-PA Accelerator in various TestDrives. Here, certain business scenarios are simulated.
In the Implement area, things start to get more specific. This is where you’ll find videos, information material, and guides. For example, the company Red Bull reports on its experiences during its implementation of SAP NetWeaver BW, powered by SAP HANA. There are also videos and information material about SAP CO-PA Accelerator. And developers who want to build an application on SAP HANA will find a six-step guide here. For those more interested in the background of in-memory technology, there’s a wealth of information from the Hasso Plattner Institute. What’s more, you can download an SAP HANA installation guide and a quick step guide.
