Green IT or Environmental Blues?

Jürgen Sturm is thoroughly unflappable. As CIO of BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte (BSH), he is responsible for 800 employees. His IT division provides
applications and an IT infrastructure for 26,000 users in 41 locations worldwide. In a company that manufactures 40 million home appliances annually and makes customer service a priority, the IT system must run smoothly.

Sturm has made sure of that. When he started at the company in Munich seven years ago, following stints at Daimler and Grundig, he launched a project called “Group Data Center 2008+.” Its aim was to consolidate a disparate IT landscape spread across more than 40 data centers and to virtualize it as far as possible. By the end of 2008, an IT platform, “weBSH. net,” was in place and running SAP applications that now process about 80% of the total business volume.
