Norway Builds Sea-Scale Fish Farms as Demand for Seafood Soars

|

The demand for seafood has doubled since 1998 and is expected to nearly double again by 2050.

To help meet the increased demand for fish, the Norwegian Department of Fisheries is encouraging fish farmers to develop new farming methods that can be deployed offshore. Nordlaks, an innovator in aquaculture, was granted special development licenses to create a massive fish farm capable of withstanding the forces of the open sea. To achieve this, Nordlaks built a vessel known as Havfarm, or ocean farm, that is 385 meters long and 60 meters wide. And to ensure the integrity of the structure, it deployed cloud software from SAP. SAP Enterprise Product Development monitors everything from residual feed on the sea floor and the integrity of the anchorage, to forces acting on the structure when it is being raised or lowered. A digital twin of the vessel shows, in real time, the forces on the hull. Thanks to this expansion of the fish farming industry in the Hadsel municipality where Nordlaks is based, there is a net growth in population.
