First Global Make-to-Order Shipbuilder to Implement mySAP™ Business Suite
Singapore — SAP Asia Pacific today announced that Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) selected mySAP™ Business Suite to integrate its office systems, enabling dynamic knowledge sharing and collaboration between employees, customers, and partners. DSME joins the growing number of Asian companies that are standardizing operations on the integrated suite. As part of mySAP Business Suite, DSME will be implementing SAP® R/3® Enterprise, mySAP™ Supply Chain Management (mySAP SCM), mySAP™ Human Resources (mySAP HR), SAP Strategic Enterprise Management (SAP SEM), and mySAP™ Product Lifecycle Management (mySAP PLM). Using mySAP Business Suite, DSME plans to establish a foundation for information sharing for its 10,000 field engineers and over 3,500 managerial employees, including more than 1,500 research and engineering resources.
The implementation is a key component of DSME’s aim to achieve improved productivity, which is part of its aggressive “Global Top 2010” initiative to position itself as the top global shipbuilder and marine engineer by the year 2010.
“As a leading global shipbuilder, DSME has created a new milestone in the industry by being the first make-to-order shipbuilder to implement fully integrated and standardized IT systems to enhance enterprise efficiencies,” said Kyu-Sang Shim, Executive Vice President (CIO), DSME. “With the implementation, we expect to reduce costs, increase efficiencies, and maximize our return on investment to evolve into the number one shipbuilder worldwide.”
“SAP understands what customers need and provides solutions that meet their specific objectives. We chose SAP because of its extensive business and industry experience—accumulated from thirty years in the business—and our confidence in the completeness of the system,” said Shim. “By successfully combining our company’s technology and business expertise with SAP solutions, we plan to redefine the IT standards in the global shipbuilding industry.”
“Shipbuilding companies handle a full range of business processes from sales, specification, engineering, procurement, construction, manufacturing, approval and maintenance of complex and unique customer specific projects,” said Robert Vetter, Vice President, Business Development, SAP Asia Pacific. “SAP has proven that it delivers the most comprehensive industry-specific business solution for the shipbuilding industry with successful track records globally. With its mySAP solution, DSME will be able to manage these complex processes and details to reduce cost, time and increased efficiencies that will drive its competitiveness in this challenging industry.”
Accenture will implement the two-phased project over a period of fifteen months that began April 1, 2003. The first phase includes the deployment of SAP R/3 Enterprise, mySAP SCM, mySAP PLM, and the payroll capability of mySAP HR. During the second phase, DSME plans to implement SAP SEM, the rest of mySAP HR, and the environment, heath, and safety capabilities of mySAP PLM.
