President Obama’s recent State of the Union address laid out an ambitious plan to build upon America’s “growing economy, shrinking deficits, bustling industry, and booming energy production.”

Strengthening the nation’s infrastructure is also on the President’s agenda and reaches far beyond the scope of the Keystone XL Oil Pipeline to cover things like modern ports, faster trains, and affordable broadband Internet.

“Let’s set our sights higher than a single oil pipeline,” Obama said. “Let’s pass a bipartisan infrastructure plan that could create more than 30 times as many jobs per year and make this country stronger for decades to come.”

In many ways, a country, city or state infrastructure is only as good as the technology that supports it. Here are five examples of how technology is already helping to strengthen infrastructures around the world:
