Bookham Technology selects SAP to unify worldwide business operations

invests in packaged industry solution to ensure greater collaboration between customers, partners and employees

LondonIntegrated optical component specialist, Bookham Technology plc, is undertaking a
£2 million project to improve links between customers, partners and employees. It plans to replace seven legacy business systems and processes with a single global
enterprise solution.

Ascent Technology was selected to implement its SAP packaged solution for sophisticated engineering companies, after a three-month due diligence exercise. The solution consists of pre-configured templates that combine best practice applications from across the industry. It provides an affordable package for Mid-Market enterprises (those with an annual turnover of less than £150 million) and is designed to grow with a company.

Over 800 Bookham Technology employees worldwide will use the solution. As it is based around one central data source it should eradicate corporate issues surrounding inconsistent and poor data quality. The new system is expected to deliver full return on investment within three years of going live.

Bookham Technology is currently integrating the SAP solution with its global Manufacturing Execution System (MES). This will streamline the manufacturing process and ensure the company is more responsive to changing market conditions and
customer requirements.

“It is a considerable undertaking to implement a solution that touches every part of our business. Although we are driving a relatively simpler solution than a full-blown SAP implementation, we have made sure that every part of our business has had some involvement in the planning and implementation process. This has helped ensure that we have global ownership and business leadership to drive the change that this new system requires,” said John Barton, vice-president of Information Systems at
Bookham Technology.

It has been through a number of similar projects for other clients so the company really knows what it is talking about. Working in partnership we’ve been able to adapt the solution to meet our needs in this highly specialised market,”
he continued.

In the future, Bookham Technology plans to extend the solution to include a business warehouse and corporate extranet to provide a better interface with its suppliers
and customers.
