University turns to software leader to update and integrate financial and HR operations for more than 5,000 staff

LondonThe University of Sheffield has selected SAP in a bid to reduce costs and improve internal efficiencies in all areas of its financial and human resources management. At a time when financial pressures are increasing, Sheffield, in common with many other British Universities, is using technology to help enable the modernisation of outdated and administratively intensive working processes.

Sheffield will replace its legacy software with elements of mySAP Business Suite, powered by SAP NetWeaver. This involves the implementation of SAP’s enterprise software solution for accounting, financial reporting, HR, Payroll, performance management and corporate governance.

Among the anticipated benefits are:

  • All academic departments will have full real-time access to, and visibility of, all their financial data and systems via the web.
  • Students will have online access to their accounts as and when they need it.
  • Researchers and staff will be able to order consumables and equipment through the new system, which will manage the whole order process through authorisation to delivery and payment.
  • The system will improve the way it supports employees throughout their employment, providing a more efficient service to its staff.
  • The University’s employees will benefit from SAP Employee Self Service, allowing them to manage their benefits, payment and expenses from their desktop.
  • By integrating HR with Financials, the system will also greatly enhance the management of research contracts, a key benefit in this research-led university.

“As an organisation partly funded by public money, we always strive to secure high quality products that deliver value for money. We selected SAP for its strong record of stability and support,” said Dave Everest, Deputy Director of Finance at the University of Sheffield. “SAP has the integrated technology with extensive functionality that will enable us to improve our service to students and other stakeholders, make us more attractive for staff and, most importantly of all, help to ensure the University of Sheffield’s long-term financial health. This is a system for the whole University, not just the Finance and HR departments.”

“We are confident that as the project progresses, Sheffield will quickly start to see the productivity improvements it is looking for – allowing it to release valuable resources for front-line services to its students.”, said Robert Mercer, Account Manager, SAP. “Once completed, Sheffield will have a financial and HR management system that will be on a par with the best-run businesses in the UK – delivering enormous benefits to both staff and students alike.”

Sheffield is using SAP Consultancy and Education for the finance implementation and SAP partner, Pecaso, for the consulting and education services for the HR implementation.
