LONDON – Ahead of the festive shopping season, Social Enterprise UK (SEUK) has launched the “Buy Social Directory” with Europe’s largest technology company SAP, enabling shoppers to easily find and buy products and services from social enterprises. Social enterprises are business which trade for a social purpose, and which are set up the take on the some of the biggest humanitarian and environmental challenges the world faces – from homelessness to the climate emergency.
With UK shoppers predicted to spend more than £80.27 billion this Christmas period – a 0.8% rise from 2018 – just one per cent spend diverted to social enterprises could make a significant impact on this sector and its beneficiaries.
Through buying from social enterprises, shoppers can make their money go further. Whether it’s clothing made by migrant women struggling to find work, handmade chocolates creating employment for people with autism or luxury skincare products supporting people with disabilities – there are social-enterprise gifts for everyone. Every time consumers ‘buy social’ they use the pounds in their pocket to help the causes that really matter.
It’s now never been easier to find social enterprises. The Buy Social Directory, based on the SAP Commerce Cloud, allows consumers to search for social enterprises by geography, location, product area, and social /environmental mission so they can find social enterprises working on the causes they care about or those in their neighborhood. The directory will be supported with the information from SEUK’s 2,500 members with the aim to make it the definitive search tool to find social enterprise products and suppliers.
For shoppers who are stuck for ideas, Social Enterprise UK have also published a Buy Social Christmas Gift Guide featuring some of the products from the directory.
The new Directory represents phase one of SAP’s collaboration with Social Enterprise UK in driving more consumers to do business with social enterprises. As the official technology partner of Social Enterprise UK, the expert body for the UK’s social enterprise sector, SAP aims to facilitate better connections between both corporate and consumer buyers with social enterprises, helping them spend better and in a more socially and environmentally sustainable way.
Peter Holbrook, Chief Executive of Social Enterprise UK commented: “The impact of our purchasing decisions is becoming ever more apparent and shoppers are increasingly looking for gifts that make a positive difference in the world around them.
The new Buy Social Directory will be the ‘google’ for those who want to use their spending power to help build a better world and the Christmas gift guide is treasure trove of presents with purpose. Social enterprises show us a different way of doing business – where quality products meet real values and where people and planet are put ahead of private profit. Through buying social this Christmas, you are making a real difference to people’s lives.”
Adaire Fox-Martin, SAP Executive Board Member for Global Customer Operations, said: “The Buy Social Directory is another vital milestone as we help scale the social enterprise sector and build more business that matters. We are proud to partner with Social Enterprise UK to connect more consumers and traditional businesses with social enterprises. There is tremendous opportunity to apply technology in service of this exciting movement and help cultivate a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable economy and better way to grow.”
